No need for since my laptop and pc are both still fast. But if someone has something older then upgrading is a good idea I think. My laptop is slower with the larger files, but just nut yet to the point I would change things.

My laptop is quadcore 2,4 GHz and 8 GB RAM while my pc is a sixcore and 16 GB RAM.

I think that when your toycomputer has a dualcore then you would benefit from upgrading big time.

I'm planning on something like that. I was looking at 27" IPS monitors@$700 and 32g of RAM as I want to to be an HT,.photo and gaming rig.

Go for the monitor with the 2560x1440 resolution, they are awesome. I have Fujitsu and that is great and not even the best in that range.

I think displays are where it's at these days. New IGZO monitors should be available soon.

I loaded a bunch of high resolution JPEG's onto our kids Samsung 10 tablet toy thing. WOW!

Some of these new tablets are incredible for viewing photos. PPI above 300 is common now.

Size isn't everything. How is the actual image quality? I haven't seen anything I'd have over my old HP. Maybe some OLED monitor, or a CRT, or a good plasma, but... I'm quite happy, even though it only has 1920x1200 and 24".

Sorry to pick your post apart, but RAM *is* your memory. The 120/500GB is your disk space.

What can I say, I'm a photography and audio geek, not a computer geek. I have to learn more about computers though. I would like to digitize my LP collection for wireless distribution.

Laptops are generally not a good idea for really taxing things. I use my work computer, which I built to handle management of 2+ million record databases without much lag time. For photo editing, there's almost no lag time on film scans, which come out as 60MB TIFFs for me.

AMD FX 8 Core running at 3.2 ghz (downclocked for better stability-- factory is 3.6 ghz)
32 GB DDR3 (PC Memory is cheap these days, and makes the most difference when editing)
Radeon HD 7770
Hadeon HD 6770
2 19" monitors (used to have one vertical one that was 26"-- was set up to simultaneously use 4 virtual machines)

Overkill for editing (need the power for work), but no matter how much I'm multitasking, I don't get hangs.

If possible, RAM is the best upgrade. 4 GB's is what I'd consider minimum these days.

4 GB is really very little. 8 GB should be the minimum.

@fretlessdavis: Are AMD CPUs that bad? I'm running overclocked from 3.4 to 4.5 GHz with no stability issued whatsoever, the computer can easily run for many weeks (until Windows wants to update). A Xigmatek Gaia and some very slow turning case fsns is all I needed. I also built several office computers/workstations that use the same CPU at 4.3 GHz and CoolerMaster EVO 212 Hyper (or so...). Work great too. And all are pretty quiet. Those computers were, including decent Xigmatek cases, a small SSD and Seasonic power supply around 300-400 Euro, IIRC. And they handle their job just fine (mostly 3D modelling and rendering). A graphics card would help with previews a bit, but otherwise... My upgrade was also around 300, since I used a better full sized board and more RAM.

If you can, use SSD. Better yet, have the photos you are working with on a SSD.

Brand new 2013 Macbook Pro with 1Tb flash disk and 16Gb RAM and i7 chip. Plenty fast enough. All drives connected to a dedicated Mac Mini Server which I access over gigabit Ethernet.

You know that WoW runs well on lower end machines due to its low polygon count, right?

It's pretty good except when going OTA as it has a de-noise circuit that affects the picture.
