I did some crops here, and the exif did not append, so I did it manually for the crops, and the full size scene to show my backyard for context:

---------- Post added 05-26-14 at 09:40 AM ----------

All the images are with the pentax 12-24 lens. The last three images are from our K5IIs and the same lens. The first 7 images are from the K3 and were taken about a minute apart. The really out of focus images were aiming at the tee, push the shutter 1/2 way, the camera focused and confirmed the focus using AFS, SPOT center AF point, and then I pushed the shutter button all the way down to make the exposure. All the pics are at 12mm. If I pushed the shutter button on the K3 down far enough to focus then let up and did it again a few times it eventually got the correct focus. All the K5IIs pics nailed the focus every time, that why I did not show multiple pics of the same scene for it. The subject did not matter, the K3 did it with birds, wood piles, trees, planes, people, etc. The crops are more or less 100%, but I did not go to great pains to make them exact.

Your converter has stripped all proper exif data out of the images
I guess photoshop elements 12 for mac has some issue as it also has no clour profile so WB will be all ove rthe place depeneding on browser nto image.

It looks like some of these images are not focused on anything, If the camera is configured correctly and using phase detect then this should not be possible as the shutter is locked until the camera reports in-focus.

Hence Exif is critical to see what the camera thought it was doing.

Can you repost image #5 using a converter that doesn't destroy exif data? or post the raw or OOC jpg

Yes it was phase detect, and it did say it was locked and then allowed the exposure to be made. Each exposure was afs, spot center af site for the K3 and just center site for the K5. As they are technical pics I did not get fussy over the wb. I'm not devoting any more time on this as I sent the camera out a few minutes ago, and the exit data stripping I'm not gonna try to fix. If anyone wants a full size jpg of the images pm me with your email address.

Yeah, the focus on some of the images does look like it picked nothing in the center to focus on. That was why I cropped the pics to show what was behind them and to show that was out of focus also. I only posted the pics because it was requested, and it took a few hours to do the and crop so I'm done with this part, just a weird issue and the same behavior as on the first K3 we had.

Unfortunately our current K3 started the AF weirdness after the latest firmware update a month or so ago, just like the first one did out of the box. it has rendered the camera unreliable so it is going in to CRIS for a look. For specifics read here if interested: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/172-pentax-k-3/263409-second-k3-stops-foc...correctly.html

Usually it is sufficient to use one thread to discuss your current issue or at least limit yourself to active threads. There should be no need to revive a dead thread. If you want to cross-reference this or your earlier AF issue threads, I would suggest providing a link back. At least that is what I do.

I agree, though it is possible to do an exposure even when AF has not locked if the camera is configured to do so. Since we can't confirm the AFS, it may be that is not the actual setting. Perhaps a full reset to factory defaults might be in order? BTW...the Exif is really flaky. The first image indicates a maximum aperture of f/1.44? An in-camera JPEG would be real helpful at this point.

Yeah, I should restrict it to one thread, will do in the future. Those pics were done after the reset, btw. Btw, pm me your email and I'll send the full size jpgs if you want.

---------- Post added 05-26-14 at 04:28 PM ----------

I just checked a copy of the pics I did the crops from, and the exif is intact on them and they are full size jpgs around 12-13mb each. I looked at them in the version 5 of the Ricoh software that came with the camera, and they all say 'Single AF' and 'Spot" as I said. So if anyone wants them I can email them to you, but the camera did allow these shots and thats why it went back to Ricoh.

My K-3 is in for repair because of this issue. I could not get it to focus reliably with FA* lenses like FA*200/4, but DA*200 was good. Im not sure what the issue is, but it seems it is unreliable with f/4 or f/5.6 lenses and good with f/2.8 lenses. Or it could be screw drive lenses vs SDM lenses.

I compared it with another K-3 and a K-5 II and both where good, but not my own K-3, unfortunately.

I'm having focus issues with my k3 and a 4 year old da 12-24 lens. The lens seems to auto correct when in manual mode and it's not as sharp as it was when used on my k10
