This is the first time I have ever had trouble upgrading firmware. I have tried more times than I care to count to upgrade my K3 to v1.02 without success. Current firmware is v1.00. Formatted 32gb card with fwdc220b.bin on card (I have tried zipped and unzipped) in slot #1, door closed, fully charged battery, press and hold menu button and turn power on. I get the screen that I always get when I turn on the camera. No firmware update screen.
I'm not very excited about about v1.02 because I generally use manual focus lenses and don't see much use for me in the AA simulator, but who knows what more useful firmware may come down the line in future.

The first firmware upgrade took me about 15 minutes to figure out. The second one I did in less than 5 minutes. I wish I knew what you are doing wrong. Hope you bought it from a local dealer. They can help you.

Your procedure description doesn't say that you copied the fwdc220b.bin file to the root of the SD card, which is where it should be placed. Plus I presume you formatted the SD card in-camera before use, not on the computer.

My first attempt the FW update didn't start. Camera went straight to normal startup routine. Assuming I had done something wrong I started over from the point of extracting the .bin file from the .exe. Second time the Update ran fine.

I always format my SD card in camera. When I insert my formatted SD card into my Mac and click on the Finder icon in the Dock the K-3 is shown as a device. When I click on the K-3 device a folder is displayed labeled DCIM. When I click on this folder it opens and is empty. This is where I put the .bin file. I don't see any indication of a root. As I recall this is the procedure I have followed with previous Pentax cameras and cameras from other manufacturers.

Put your .bin file OUTSIDE the DCIM folder. It should be visible next to the folder when the K3 Device is clicked. That is the Root Directory for the card - both the .bin file and the DCIM Folder will be in the Root Directory.

Doing that should rectify your problem.

Thank you, Monochrome. K-3 now at v1.02
How can something so simple be so difficult?
Maybe I need to go back to Tri-X.

Tram- what kind of batteries? This is what we are trying to determine. Also when the batteries expired, did it shut your whole camera down? Or were you able to turn off and then turn back on with the batteries then transferring?
Pentax (not ricoh) in the camera, eneloopmin the grip. Got a black screen with white lettering that said something to the effect that batteries were depleted. This was with battery selection in menu set to auto, and with all batteries charged. I turned off. Then back on, and changed menu item battery selection to nimh. Haven't depleted battery grip yet so don't know how the system will respond. Battery source set to grip first.

I think so the camera gets the correct focal length (with converter) to guide shutter speed selection in program mode - my speculation.

I'm having the same problem TaiChiTom had. 20th attempt, six different SD cards of various sizes, copying the .bin file to the root. I have updated firmware on thousands of devices. This one appears broken.
I will switch over to the PC and try 20 more times before I start pointing fingers.[COLOR="Silver"]

---------- Post added 02-09-14 at 01:44 PM ----------

First try on the PC worked just fine. The words on the screen flashed 54 times before displaying "COMPLETE". Now do I reformat all these SD cards to their original cameras, or do I go out and shoot?
