I would like to know if I can use the Pentax AF-500ftz with the Pentax K3? Any thing I need to be aware of or any settings I need to make for correct operation. Thanks so much.

It is not compatible with the new P-TTL system. You will have to use it in manual mode. I sold mine for a song and bought an AF 540 FGZ for an opera.

You can use it in manual. It's a nice flash, well made, even in manual it can use useful in many situations.
