I would file this under "things to not do when using SD with a Mac". If a card is not cleanly unmounted, there is the possibility of leaving the filesystem in an indeterminate state making it unreadable. There is little the next reader (the camera) can do to remedy the situation. I betcha if you insert the same card into another computer or one of your other cameras you will get a similar error.
