The lens is going back today. It could be that it stops just really short of achieving the required focus, so in the viewfinder the image looks focused but the camera thinks it isn't.

Edit: I have just tested the camera with an old 16-45 lens and against fine grass in the distance it always shoots, so it had to be the SDM lens!

Finally it turned up today, and yes it seems to have been fixed.
