What Happened?

I don't get it. What happened to this image? I thought that light leaks were only possible with film?

Veiling flare from shooting into the sun?

I don't see the light leak in this photo, but they are definitely possible. Sources of the leaks include the lens mount flange, extension tubes, mount adapters, a damaged lens barrel, or even the viewfinder eyepiece if direct sun strikes it during the exposure. Cameras are only relatively light tight.

Neither do I see any leaks, just some veiling due to the sun being in a bad position, possibly without a hood and with a filter.

What lense was that?
I'm 99% sure it's not light leak. To me it looks like you were shooting wit max aperature and directly into the sun. That's why you have low contrast and veiling.

Sorry, yes, no light leak... but I wasn't shooting in direct sun. The frame after which was direct sun was just overexposed, no flare. Max aperture yes, no hood, still looking for one. Got one you wanna sell me?!

Get one off eBay for probably about $10, delivery included. Hoods are a necessity most times, even more so if you are shooting in the general direction of the sun.

One more thing: you were using the FA* 400mm? Because lenses from that era have different coatings and might not work as great with modern digital sensors (because sensors are more reflective than film, not sensitive to UV, but sensitive to magentas. Digital sensors also have a different DR curve, especially in the highlights)
Anyway, buying a genuine MH-RBB77 hood might be difficult and cost over $40. You can find them online, though. But you can probably get a cheap chinese one that will do the job for under $20. (I just checked ebay and found a metal 77mm hood for $2.99, with free shipping. There seem to be two generic, cheap 77mm tele hoods, one much deeper than the other. You can get them both for under $20 total)

It appears you've exceeded the capability of the lens to transmit light to the sensor possible reasons below

1 no hood
2 tangential light on front element causing veiling
3 telephoto lens used at dusk = high thermals causing veiling
4 poor/damaged coatings
5 poor lens element alignment
6 high compression
7 poor lens design for digital (no light baffles in lens)

I short your seeing light bouncing in the lens and hitting the sensor at oblique angles not adding to the image contrast but subtracting in areas.

I need a fix my own The tabs that lock the hood in are completely worn down. The hood slides on and off the lens really well now though!
