Neither photo looks natural on my monitor. Both have exaggerated saturation and contrast.
But the Sigma DP2M looks more natural compared to the K3.

As it should as I think the OP has admitted the Pentax image is really an HDR composite.

A couple from my day yesterday, Sigma DP2M @ƒ 3.2 and DA 18-135 @ ƒ5.6 and 48mm. Both hand held.... The Sigma is noticeably sharper at the pixel level, but, it has a lot less pixels.

The K-3 is way out front in the colours it reproduces. The Sigma has better detail, even though the lens is shorter and there's less magnification.

I think if I was interested in printing the images , either would do... there's a difference, my own preference would be the K-3 image... but there would be nothing wrong with using the Sigma image either, and the next set of images, my preference could be reversed. Different usually mean, one image from one camera is good in one instance, but perhaps not the next.

The Sigma image is sharper, but to me that makes the image less enjoyable...

OP, I do not see how you can compare these two images as the DR compression is much greater in the first image. For ex, the green line of trees is gained up vs the second pic where it is all black.

Different look and different strengths, no winner at all between them, and I'd be happy taking either picture if I was in your shoes.

K3 seems to have better DR.
DP2m has stronger contrast due to the lower DR which can work well for a shot.
Seemingly the grass stands out too with the DP2m shot.
The too strong sharpness and microcontrast from the Foveon can give a 'hardness' to the water.
Not too bad here, but on more choppy waters, I find that it can look too sharp (and 'sharp' water looks odd to me); almost seems like I'd need a slower shutter speed to tone it down.

Tough comparison. For some reason, I always feel like Foveon shots have an over-sharpened look and the colors sometimes look off (maybe just because I'm used to how CMOS sensors render things).

As the OP Sigma shot is taken about an hour later than the Pentax shot it's really difficult to compare them.
A lot can happen with the light in an hour on the afternoon. (from 4 PM to 5 PM)

Sigma looks more like film with overall better colors.

Did you see the post above your post? They weren't taken in the same light.
