If it says auto, you are in, well, auto. Switch to focus point select. You can do this from the control panel or using the AF Mode button in conjunction with the rear e-dial.
This is in the manual on page 44. The "select focus point" icon will display and you can use the four-way controller to chose your point. Half-press shutter or OK button to go back to normal mode. If you want to change it again, use the "select focus point" button at lower right at camera rear to go back into select mode.

This is how it works on the K-5, but the K-3 is different in how it manages that function. There is a dedicated button.
