Another K-3 Shadow Recovery Test

My shadow recovery test generated some interest last time, so I decided to do it again.

Original image has a -3.5EV comp IIRC. It converted nicely to B&W. At some point, I'll head back and shoot this again so I can avoid the crop.

What editor are you using? Shot in raw?

LR5, shot in RAW.

Impressive. The recovered shot looks as if you used a soft box to light the scene. Also helps to have a top notch glass in front of the camera as well. I have done some shadow recovery in my pics but nothing this extreme.

They were not kidding when they claim the camera has almost 14 stops of dynamic range!

Good job.

Thanks. I've got a window to my left and behind me in the shot. They are mostly covered by foliage, plus it was raining pretty hard which helped provide that "soft box" look. It's quite nice and I think I'm going to shoot a whole set inside the little shack.

Gave it a go in color as well, I actually think I like this better:

Good example of the K3 prowess. Now why did you decide to do a b/w rendition? Was that due to the color noise/unwanted noise that gets introduced when boosting shadows?

Very impressive. I like both interpretations, but I think I actually prefer the color one even though I am partial to B&W. The fine color gradation is really nice.

That is really impressive. I had a similar situation but not nearly as extreme, I had a face in shadow and I used the highlight/shadow option on CS5 to pull the detail out, and my editor was very pleased with the shot. But that was nothing like what you did with this scene. This was was incredibly well done.

This is a very good showing of the shadow recovery abilities of the K-3. I love the informations in the shadows a lot. If i´m in a difficult situation i have no fear to underexpose. There is so much information to get out of the shadows. But i struggle with skincolor in these situations.
