I would love a switch that said:
SR A (auto)
SR H (horizontal panning)
SR V (Vertical panning)
SR Off
If I'm not mistaken, this is what Olympus has put on it's latest MILCs (at least the better ones).

VisualDarkness I set my RAW/Fx button to SR On/Off mainly because I got annoyed with the multi button pushes to turn SR off when I use a tripod.

I guess the SR switch on my K10d works without using up my one and only USER mode. Of course it won't set SR off either, I have to use my thumb.

Funny, I briefly had an Olympus EM10 before I lost it ( ), I don't think I'd ever use that feature, SR on or off is good enough for me.

Same here. I shoot action with SR off, but I don't see why I should miss it at all. I'm normally shooting action at shutter speeds higher than 1/(equivalent FL). SR won't help, but it can certainly can hurt, IME.

This is exactly why I want a SR on/off button when shooting sports.
You can set the Raw/Fx button to toggle SR.

Skip it, SR is forced to switched-off state when you activate self-timer .

Back to the park today - unfortunately for me Finn didn't do much running so I couldn't practice too much! I had the camera set to continuous autofocus, SR off and (most of the time) spot focus, at the beginning I was using a small centre cluster of focus points. I took a few of him running right towards me, found they were almost all focused near the back of him. I'm not sure if this is that I wasn't precise enough with my focusing efforts or the focus was just trailing behind him. Something to keep an eye on more next time! He ran by once and I got a good track going.

Funny, every time I think I have this sorted out, and there's something I've done a little off but I feel I'm getting closer.

Focus trailing behind

Pentax bodies previous to the K-3 allow SR when panning. The K-3 shuts it down. Some people are annoyed by this, but I prefer it. It has been my experience that SR causes blur when panning. A down side to the camera shutting SR off, is that it can also spool up again while you're shooting, guaranteeing a blurry image.
I didnt know that. How can we know for sure that it switches it off when panning? I am not aware that it is written anywhere in the user manual.

Here's a nice example I took with the SR set to "on". Shutter speed was 1/30s.

Cheers

EDIT: Never mind. It is very easy to check. I have just mimicked panning movements with SR on and, every time, I see the green-hand that switches off in the VF. I took more than 15,000 photos with my K-3 and never paid attention to it. Doh!!!

Secondly I've never been successful panning with SR done. How would it know the difference between a sudden short pan and a jerky shake?
Does this one count? The panning action was a full 120 degrees with the shot taken at about 90 degrees. The bikes were going about 30 MPH and were only about 10 feet away (fisheye lens). Shutter speed was 1/30s. Oh, and the camera was a K10D.

To be honest, I don't know that it would make too much difference if the panning motion is smooth and continuous.

Steve

I just leave it on and let it turn itself off.
