K3II: Pixel Shift First Test

I just picked up the K3II and was intrigued to try the pixel shift on a static subject. This is of a room in the house and was shot on a tripod with mirror up and with the DA 16-85 lens. I also shot the same scene in RAW (DNG) using pixel shift and the files were only 28MB so am somewhat confused by what people are saying that the files should be 100MB. The example photos are below. Note that so far pixel shift makes only a subtle difference in this scene that I can see. Yes I have viewed at 100% and there maybe a little contrast and detail increase. Any other experiences? Note that I bought the K3II (sold the K3 2 weeks ago) for the better SR and GPS. The 1st photo is regular processing the 2nd is pixel shift.

Pentax has stated that the pixel shift was more for noise reduction than for an increase resolution. Also my K-3 images are about 28-32MB so I'm wondering if you captured all you expected?

My guess is that you'll see the difference at 100% and in the woven details and colors of the painting. The difference will be subtle for details, but color fidelity in small details should be greatly increased.

I don't think anyone expects it to be a huge difference over the K-3... right?

Pixel shift is supposed to increase quality on the pixel level, from such low-res images most people couldn't tell the difference between a K3 and a 645Z. The file-size is probably smaller because it has less noise. Noise is random so you have to store each individual pixel separately, while you can use algorithms for repeating patterns (such as a wall). Just like ISO 800 files are bigger than ISO 100 files are. Dunno where those extra 48 million subpixels went though... As far as I know Bayer DNG's only store one color per pixel and the RAW converter has to demosaic the picture, so RGB DNG should be larger in size. Feel free to correct me if I said something silly

Could you show us enlargements of, say, part of the painting, some of the wicker, and the plant leaves?

Did the camera fire four times and the result was one DNG of normal size? That doesn't sound right.

No the camera did not fire the shutter 4 times but did some extra processing. Does the Pixel Shift use electronic shutter as the mechanical shutter only fired once?

They mentioned it's electronic to reduce shake.

The ultimate test ,IMO, would be the "blow out the red channel with a red flower" test. If it passes that test then it is a winner.

It should fire the shutter 4 times.

EDIT

Or open the shutter and then using electronic shutter, i.e if 1/2000 => 1/250

I changed the RAW file format to PEF and the file size increases to 126 MB vs 26 for the DNG.

So Why is there such a huge difference ? That's 5 x times larger file size ?

What I would like to know is if the image becomes larger than 24 MP or if it just gets more detail. When I do this "manually" I get a 96 MP image from 20 or so images taken handheld OR if on tripod and I stack them I get a clearer image 24 MP with less noise. The manual on the K-3 II really explains how the function is intended to work...NOT.

Would you mind uploading the JPG's in their original size to something like Flickr ? As other have mentioned, there is no point comparing images with such a low resolution.
