K-3 failing to save many images!

I've been systematically photographing all the gravestones in a local cemetery lately, using my K-3 with battery grip. I go out with a list of stones to photograph, check them all off as I shoot them, and then go home to process and post the images. I've been mystified to find that some stones I KNOW I've shot are simply not being recorded in my camera. This morning I shot ~150 photos, came home and copied them to my computer, and BOTH my cards (a 32GB recording RAW and a 16GB recording JPEG) contained only 53 photos. The shutter fired for every shot I took over a span of 2.5 hours, but there was one interval of 57 minutes and two of about 15 minutes each during which I took many shots and nothing at all was recorded. The first 16 and last 20 shots I took were saved, and 17 others were saved in two sequences in between, but about 100 others simply aren't on the memory cards. The ones that are there are numbered in sequence from 2189 to 2241. My batteries were fully charged when I began and 2/3 full when I got home. What could be going on?

Could be a problem with your SD card.

I would start with the memory card. It's usualy the weakest link in the recording process.

Could it be the dhe dreaded mirror-flop where the mirror flips up and down (usually like a machine gun several times), but no image gets recorded because the shutter doesn't fire. I experienced this today with my K-3 with the firmware update that was released a few days ago. My first time ever BTW with a Pentax.

You may have been fiddling with a setting and were in preview mode (with the K-3 for white balance, as its the only mode where this could happen). IE, you wanted to check white balance, so were on the preview screen, in which case hitting the shutter will give you a preview of what you want to shoot, but won't actually fire and record without an extra step involved.

My guess here is probably user error (I've done the same before, but usually only for a shot or two) If you were in "shoot, move to next stone, shoot, next stone" mode, I could easily see pulling a D'OH and doing what you're describing.

Ole, was there a gap in the number sequence?

Were you using the optical viewfinder, or were these shots taken using LiveView?

I've had the same problem, taking photos at a Color Run 5k, Just quit recording the photos. Both cards were set on jpeg, shut the camera off, removed the cards and reinserted one card and continued to shoot.
The reason I realized that they weren't being recorded was a message appeared on the screen saying that the photos weren't being recorded, not a good situation when you're being paid to take these photos.

Could it be if one card fails they both fail to record? (Not very good as backup then.)
