No, I haven't done the update as of yet; after reading Ivanvernon's experience. If this was to happen to anyone, it probably would be me, and I don't wish to be without my beautiful K3 for months, if something does go wrong. Right now, the camera is performing way above my expectations, and I'm in no hurry to try this.

"The only way you'd know if the .bin file was okay was to check and compare its filesize against a known good one, or even better, did a checksum against a known good one."

It's things such as this, that are way over my capabilities on a computer.
Carol, I've just helped another forum member via skype with his update issues. If you'd like me to run through it with you, feel free to contact me on skype user name mark-jerling.

I'm updating my firmware right now. I got to the "NOW LOADING" screen and walked away for a minute. Now everything is blank and the camera looks like it turned itself off. Never saw the "COMPLETE" message. Can I turn it off and back on? Worried at the moment.

'COMPLETE' only displays very (very) briefly, I missed it when updating firmware.
When the screen is black after it is safe to turn camera off and on.

Mark, thank you; I don't have Skype however. I'm still debating whether I want to risk the firmware update or not.

So site was hanging up this a.m. for me, resulting in this and another double post. I was away from the computer after than; I corrected it as soon as I saw it; don't think it was hindering anything.

No problem Carol. If you want help, as noted - then get Skype, (it's free) and I'll run you through it step by step.

I've updated 4 different Pentax bodies at least a dozen times without an issue over the past 5 years. The process is really really simple. Of course issues can happen but those issues are very very rare, otherwise I doubt Pentax would let us flash our cameras ourselves with their procedure.

The key is making sure you have a fully charged (preferrably OEM) battery. Not guessing that it is full.. not turning the camera on and seeing full bars.. but sticking the battery in the charger and waiting until the light goes out. fresh.

Also, I format the SD card with the camera before flashing.. that way I know the camera knows the format/file structure of the card.

If it really freaks you out, perhaps let the repair facility do it for you under warranty (CLA). But that really shouldn't be necessary...
