Is there a way to let the GPS set the date and time of the photos with the correct local time offset, i.e. NOT to zulu time?

I realize I can correct it later, but when traveling I might not recall which zone I was in and it's a pain to have to reconstruct the offset. I realize I could just turn off the feature that lets the GPS set the time, but it is kinda useful. And I must be missing something, cuz it's like a script that even I could write (look at time offset for userpref=time, add to GPS time. Done.).
