Having issues with the Tamron 1.4 Teleconverter

I have been out taking gobs of pictures with the K3 and the DA*300 and didn't have any issues. The last couple of outings I have tried using the Tamron-F 1.4X Pz-AF MC4 and it seems like the camera/lens is searching to focus in small increments. I have cleaned contacts on the camera, lens and both sides of the teleconverter. I am shooting using a tripod and shoot still objects.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if so were they able to correct it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

i have the same issue with the 50-135. I think it's just a quirk of the combo.

Have you tried the TC with another lens or the lens by itself? Sometimes if light is not good enough the lens will have a hard time focusing.

I read that the tc may not AF well in some circumstances if the lens is not F 2.8 or brighter.

I have the same Tamron TC as you. It's just par for the course using a TC. Mine has a harder time with the DA 50-135 and the DA 200. My F*300 seems to work the best with a lot less hunting. I've come to the conclusion that the TC works best for stationary objects using a tripod. It is what it is.........

Thanks for all the replies. At least I know it isn't something that I'm doing.

Is there a better teleconverter for this than the Tamron? I am using it for wildlife so the extra reach is really nice. I also have the Sigma 50-500, but I'm not ready to start lugging that thing around.

Thanks
Jim

If you want to spend $450 on the new Pentax HD 1.4 TC many people swear by it for the DA*300, but I'm just not willing to part with that much cash for a TC. I paid $115 for my Tamron TC so I'm happy with that.

The Pentax one is excellent.

Never had focus problems with it as described here.

Have you tried the Pentax teleconverter with the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 or the Sigma 50-500?

Those are about the only other lenses I use anymore.

Thanks

It depends which Sigmas your talking about

The HD converter will work well with all screw drive Sigmas but Sigma HSM reverse engineering is flaky
the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX OS wil not focus well with the HD converter

For the HSM Bigma you need others to respond.
Sigmas I have and tried the HD converter with

Sigma 400 Telemacro = good
Sigma Bigma EX = good
Sigma 70-200 EX = good
Sigma 70-200 EX os = unusable

IMO the HD converter is considerably better value as an in lens converter than the Pz tamron/teleplus etc it works
I bought my Pz 1.4 and 2.0 converters years ago and paid £32 and £8 respective about what they're worth .!
I paid £379 for my HD converter and again feel I got value.

If you want/need to drive in lens Pentax lens in AF with a converter and have full SR etc then don't throw any money on the non functional Pz legacy converters.

I have the same Tamron TC, and use it with my DA55-300. I've had such great luck with it, wildlife almost exclusively. I don't find it "hunts" any more than the 55-300 does without the TC. All my photos of wildlife are handheld.
