Noise

Help ! I shoot only in RAW and I have been shooting with my K5IIS (still am) & K5. Since I have received my K3 I am wondering if the camera may have a problem or I have setting wrong, although any noise settings I presume would only apply to in camera JPEGS. What I have shooting at only ISO 800 aperture priority is the noise is much more pronounced than on any of my K5 equip. Is this normal for the higher resolution sensor on the K5IIS ??

Yep normal for the k-3 just apply a small amount of noise reduction in post on the raw file. Lightroom maybe 20 points.

This is a know issue with the K3. Noise does show up earlier. It me awhile to get used to that. The good news is that you can clean the files in post. You can have a read here if you have not already.

More noise when vkwed at one to one. Less or equal perciptible noise when viewed full size due to smaller pixels.

Does this mean JPEG shooters should not bother moving to the 24M (let alone 36M) sensor due to noise generation?

No. I don't shoot jpeg so no personal experience but others have reported quite clean jpegs. Which implies that the jpeg rendering engine is cleaning that noise in camera.

And as to 36mp (the K-1 anyway) first user reports are indicating a remarkably clean image. So I don't think the number of pixels has a direct relationship to the apparent noise but rather the sensor itself. The k-5 16mp sensor was very good. The 24mp sensor in the k-3 is also very good but does show noise. There are many threads about this and people moving from the k-5 (including myself) initially complained about this. But we eventually realized the k-3 sensor is NOT the k-5 sensor (duh) and needs to be post processed differently.

I have shot k-5IIs and k-3II side by side for some time now. The files need processed differently, but in the end I prefer the k-3 files noise and all. So much so the k-5IIs has been sold.

Not at all. The reason for the increased noise was due to cramming more MP in the same size sensor as the 16mp but the noise with the increased resolution is softer and more easily removed with less loss of detail. The 36MP K1 for one is larger 35mm size sensor and should render less noise than any of the Aps-c sensors.

OK. I'm also disappointed with the noise results in my k-3II. I've always shot in raw+ jpeg and would normally process jpeg files. I think I'll give processing raw a try. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for your tip guys. I processed a couple of raw files and they were much better than jpegs directly generated by my k-3II. From now on I'll process my photos from my raw files. JPEG from raw+jpeg settings will just be used as backup and documentation.

That's what I do too. JPG's for quick photos I can share quickly, and RAW for the ones I really care about. One thing about RAW + JPG is viewing or deleting both files simultaneously when you're sorting through hundreds of pictures and deleting the ones you'll never use (blinks, blurry, sneezes, and duplicate poses).

I ended up finding FastPictureViewer Pro which works great for this. (FastPictureViewer Professional | A Fast 64 bit Raw Image Viewer for Windows 8.x Desktop, Windows 7, Windows Vista & XP. - It's currently $50, but I think I got it cheaper.) This program knows to group RAW and JPG files with the same name together when you scroll through them, and it will delete them both at once so you don't have to do it separately.

I believe you can also set up some freeware software to do something similar, but I can't remember the name and it required editing some lines of code to link and hide different file types. I'm happy with FPV out of the box, so I didn't bother.

Hi.

I always suggest having a look at this thread for those with a K3 wanting to do hi iso:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/172-pentax-k-3/269926-concert-shot-k-3-sigma-18-35-a.html

Cheaper than buying a K1 although I want one!
