If you mess it up then you just have no protector ring to put back on. More first will get in but other than that it will still work.

I came once across a lens with those difficulties but it wasn't that special so I didn't invest further thought into modifications.

It worked! Got the protector out and ground down that long piece with the bench grinder. Wiped it down good and have taken a few shots on the K-3. Waiting for the heat index to drop below 100 before I do much with it. Thanks for the advice!
