@snake Actually, there is a social aspect to choosing a Pentax. Similar to choosing a Subaru or a Saab (15 years ago). If you don't understand that, well, you don't understand.

At the very least, we should have similar preferences regarding photographic tools.
I agree it doesn't make sense to consider ourselves part in a guild, definitely not a cult - but I see nothing wrong with forming a club around this idea. After all, such clubs are formed around many brands, and are seen mostly as an occasion to socialize and exchange opinions/share experience with the said brands.

Regarding cryptic source. The guy is almost always very accurate in his leaks/predictions. I think, every time he balance on the edge do not tell more from what he knows. With non transparent Ricoh/Pentax PR we still live in the secrecy and world of rumors, unfortunately.
As the icing on the cake, Ricoh may come out with a story similar to Nikon's — that Ricoh have actually designed the sensor.*
God help us from millions of threads then ..

K-3, D5200 and D7100 sensors aren't the same.: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

I would say these sensors are not the same. The wiring is different. The first one is D5200 sensor. The second, D7100, lower resolution one from Nikon website looks the same as D5200. The third one (from IR site) is K-3 sensor.

FYI- the execs over in Japan told my journalist today that the K-3 uses a Sony sensor. I don't believe they commented on whether or not it was a new chip or one used in existing cameras.

Several other questions were also asked (i.e. about the Ricoh logo on the back). The official story is being worked on now and should appear on our homepage tomorrow.

They also said that production K-3's won't start appearing for another two weeks, approximately (and that we would get one in Japan). The existing pre-production models are still missing a number of sub-menus and have bugs, so I wouldn't recommend analyzing photos from any K-3's not running v1.00. For this reason, I've also decided not to publish any stories about pre-production bodies.

Disclaimer (which will now accompany all my posts): this information is based on a personal interview at the Pentax HQ but nevertheless does not express the official opinion of PentaxForums.com or our editorial staff. Stay tuned for the full story on our homepage.

Yep, I'll take that as good news and I'd be willing to bet that it's a brand-new one. Sounds like we may not have the K-3 in our American hands until sometime after the 1st, though.

I would be pretty shocked if Pentax used a 3 year old Sony sensor in their flagship body, and given that the K-3 has a higher ISO range I would bet the new sensor is a marked improvement over the 16MP in the K-5. Pentax/Ricoh can't afford to put an older, below average sensor in a camera that is expected to have a 2-3 year product cycle.

Sounds good... Sony does make good sensors - they're just terrible at using it themselves, heh.

Yay... that is encouraging... perhaps the sensor in the K-3 may be (just may be) better than the one used in the D7100 which currently has a lower price tag.

I think that's a no-brainer. We're talking (probably) brand-new technology vs. 2 or 3 year-old technology.

Well yes, some knew it a week ago.
Pentax engineers were waiting all this long just to whack inside the old sensor?

Thank you for clearing this up, and for the additional information (which I can't wait to read).

Excellent news. Now to see if it's an older or a newer sensor and see how it performs.
