Excellent news. Now to see if it's an older or a newer sensor and see how it performs.
Brand new.
That it performs well, you can see from the K3 specs: no more auto ISO limits; no more ISO 80 "cheat". If it were an old one, all those tricks would still be in place.
Now, the DR just goes, from 100 to 51K. Cmon people, read the specs — it is full of obvious things no one cares to see.

Anyway, I have no idea who started this "it's an old sensor" / "must be one from the D7100" stories.
SonyRumors? DPR? DPR wrote some utter rubbish in their preview, they have no idea how to explore the subject without messing around with facts. I still recall their EM1 fiasco preview. Now, they can't even understand what is Pentax and what is Ricoh.

Or was it PF adding some oil as well?

This "sensor issue" is a typical case of a bad, bad, bad journalism that shouldn't happen.

It seems only Imaging Resource can write a decent, interesting and explored piece that makes sense; they have even analysed the vibration of the AA system while DPR is still puzzled about the Ricoh logo on the back of camera!

What limits are you speaking of? Shall I post ISO 10,000+ shots I've taken using auto ISO?

Don't know what's so much of a "cheat" about it. It's a setting. We now have contemporaries going to ISO50. And this "cheat" (whatever that means) can be applied in PP. Does that make it "cheating" when I shoot at ISO 6400 and add +.39 in PP and bring it up to almost ISO9000?

Answered and documented. Adam "confirmed" it here, which he has since retracted (sort of) and made good by getting word from an unknown contact of a contact. AsahiMan on DPR, who is a known direct line, had confirmed it earlier on that it was a Sony, but people disputed that because he was wrong about a September release date (likely because some internal works at Ricoh changed things up). So a frenzy began to tell the exact opposite of everything he talked about. For instance, many forums were citing him as saying it was Sony, but after the wrong date fiasco, they shifted to Toshiba/same as d7100.

DCWatch Japan says it's a Sony sensor in it's overview of the K-3 [Google translate]: "Imaging element is made by Sony...". They are a reputable JP site.

For this reason, I've also decided not to publish any stories about pre-production bodies.

Disclaimer (which will now accompany all my posts): this information is based on a personal interview at the Pentax HQ but nevertheless does not express the official opinion of PentaxForums.com or our editorial staff. Stay tuned for the full story on our homepage.
Not even the one about the body found passed out in a Japanese hotel with the three hookers and a jar of Nikon shutter oil?

Disclaimer OK, but keep it short please. I'm fed up of getting forwarded business emails of 2-3 lines and 4 pages made up of each businesses' disclaimer notice!

All right, we already have several people hearing from Pentax that it's a Sony sensor. The only logical conclusion is... that it's a Toshiba, and someone at Pentax is trolling us

Google translate changed it from 24.35MP to 2,435MP.

As the one Ricoh made, by launching the K-3

I don't buy that a brand new Pentax flagship could possibly use an underperforming 2-years old sensor. I was skeptical about the Toshiba one, and guess what...

I think that's a no-brainer. We're talking (probably) brand-new technology vs. 2 or 3 year-old technology.
Sounds good... just don't want to be the underdog again as in the case of K-5 vs D7000...

I think most will be happy that we have a fighting chance to not have banding when pushing the shadows. This is something I'm fairly sick of dealing with when processing RAW files of others using the 5DII/III and why I elected to go with the K-5, as opposed to getting a FF Canon.

So hopefully the first examples will proper FW will indicate what we'll be dealing with.
