(As a side note I always find it curious that the term "American" is used interchangeably with "person from the USA". There are more Americans from outside of the US, after all.)
Notice how "united" is so wrongly used:
When United Airlines united the airlines they left out most of the airlines, even in US.
When Manchester United united Manchester they left out another local Premier League club, Manchester City.
When the United States of America united America they left out Canada, Mexico, Panama ...
