We finally installed natural colored wicker roll shades and that seems to have reduced the collisions, but we have to remember to lower all 12 when we leave the room.
I too have a bird-window problem, though without the mulberries. Shades up, shades down, they keep running into the glass. I went outside to see what they see and there was nothing obvious except that the windows most commonly struck were those near tree branches and those branches are quite nicely reflected in the glass.
My current hypothesis goes like this:
- The backyard neighbors have feeders
- The birds occupy the nearby trees (mostly in my yard) waiting their turn at the feeders
- There is a Coopers Hawk that regularly visits as well and has been seen in hot pursuit through the trees and branches
- I believe the birds are frantically piloting escape routes that lead them into the glass
I heard A Thump
...no, it did not get up and fly away...
