I can totally understand why certain very loyal long-term Pentaxians are abandoning ship. All this insensitive bigoted love-it-or-leave-it attitude.
Less kindness and understanding. That's exactly what we need now amongst Pentaxians. Let's make things worse. That's bound to help Ricoh!
In every way possible this will be the best K-mount camera ever made, and and we the users wage a small civil war over the logo. I do prefer that it says pentax, but when the time comes when I can afford to buy it for myself, I won't refuse to buy it just because it says Ricoh. I say "much ado about nothing" as I'm indifferent the logo. I'm really happy that a great K-mount camera is being made, period.

Up until this point I have never seen a multiple page discussion on an issue that doesnt affect usability whatsoever in this forum before, that's what kind of baffles me about this whole thing. I think this thread in itself is bad for Ricoh, making Ricoh / Pentax fans look really petty. And of course for some reason I'm making it worse with this post.

As a side note, my dream is to have a "fisher price" camera that can switch sensors, I want to choose between D800, 5D classic, and M9, and want it to take lenses from all mounts (FA 31, Canon 50/1.2, Nikon 70-200), yum

I have always been rather brand indifferent, but I guess having partly switched made me totally indifferent. I like Pentax because of what the cameras and lenses give me, not simply because it's Pentax.

I absolutely HATE having Ricoh on the back, when every camera under Hoya/Pentax put their name on the required electrical device tag on the bottom of the camera.
Stencil and airbrush, turns out my 27yo Son makes models and has a great airbrush kit
So I will have a Pentax branded Pentax K-3 (on order)

After what Ricoh appears to have done with the K-3, I don't know why anyone would hate them. 20 years ago my touch football team was sponsored by Ricoh and we all had Ricoh shirts and baseball hats, well not officially, one of our team members worked for them and liberated them for us. I wonder if I can still find that old hat. It was always a really ugly hat, I only wore it for games or when I couldn't find anything else.

After all Mitsubishi owns Nikon and they don't have a small 'Mitsubishi' on the back of the camera.
Maybe Nikon hasn't produced a camera that Mitsubishi feels is worthy of the Mitsubishi name.

I dunno. I think it was because Mitsubishi has too many letters (10) to fit over the front of a Nikon camera. Nikon is 5 letters...case closed.

I'm not sure you can give credit to Ricoh for the K-3. It's development had probably started by the time Ricoh had control of the company.

Both Hoya and Ricoh bought Pentax for what Pentax could do for them. Not the other way around. Pentax has the technology, engineering and expertise. Now Ricoh own's that capability. Over time they may be credited with more than that but they have to prove themselves. I think this is the issue with Ricoh being on the name. If they promote and enhance Pentax or even maintain what little hold it has on the industry then they will have earned their place on the camera.

I'm sure all of us hope that Ricoh does succeed with Pentax. Pentax is a major brand like Harley Davidson and Indian Motorcycles, Vox amplifiers, McIntosh amplifiers and will probably outlast all of its buyers and sellers if those buyers and sellers have any sense at all.

Here's an interesting quote from dp review that lends credence to this thread:

"The biggest change to the K-3 isn't a feature at all, but it will probably garner the most discussion. There is now a prominent 'Ricoh' logo on the back of the camera, just below the LCD. Ricoh has stated that Pentax is a 'brand' now, similar to 'Lumix' on Panasonic cameras. We're curious to see how the very loyal Pentax audience will react to this change."

Aren't all Panasonic cameras branded "Lumix"? If so, it's not quite the same.

Like Aristophanes said, photography here is a religion, and I guess some people call their god "Pentax."

On this matter I prefer to be an Agnostic

I'm not buying a K-3 either

I am profoundly disappointed in Pentax for not making the K-3 a full frame DSLR. This morning Sony announced its compact full frame camera, so they are acknowledging the market potential. We Pentax loyalists are owed no less, and it is a mistake to alter the display to Ricoh. Sony should have kept the Minolta name intact, and Ricoh should do the same for Pentax. They have to decide whether or not to stay in the camera business. If they limit their offerings to low-midrange they will ultimately lose everything. I remember when Herbert Keppler was alive he used mostly Pentax cameras for his Popular Photography articles. There is pent up demand for a full frame Pentax. Sad to see that Ricoh doesn't get it.

No kidding. All the folks that won't buy what seems to be a big step forward for the Pentax brand (yes, it's a brand name) because of the name on the back LCD, well, are welcome to not buy it. I'm sure lots of other folks will buy it, and Ricoh will be happy with it's investment in the Pentax brand. Maybe even some very vocal "never-ever" folks here might end up (quietly, sheepishly) buying a K-3 because it takes their lenses and might even take great photos!

I would hazard to say that people who buy Pentax buy it because they want something special. If they just wanted a camera that takes pictures, they would buy the first thing that the salesman showed them - i.e. a Canikon. So they have invested in their decision to buy a Pentax and this is probably why its a bit personal.

Time for a little bit of history here, I think.
QuoteQuote:
In 1952 Asahi Optical introduced its first camera, the Asahiflex (the first Japanese SLR using 35mm film). The name "Pentax" was originally a registered trademark of the East German VEB Zeiss Ikon (from "Pentaprism" and "Contax") but, as all Germans patents were annulled with the country's defeat, the name "Pentax" was taken by the Asahi Optical company in 1957.
OK it's from Wikipedia ( ) but if true, the Pentax trademark/name was, let's say, legally "appropriated" by Asahi in the first place so perhaps we shouldn't get too hung up about it. K-mount and the lenses are probably what set it apart these days, the 'smallest lightest SLR' body of M series fame seems to be becoming a thing of the past (my ME Super body weighs only 460 grams!)

I can't see why Ricoh would drop the Pentax name though but if they ever did, I'd prefer to see RiKoh on it than Ricoh.

Black electrician's tape works great for covering up the pesky "Check Engine" light in my car. I'm sure I could use it to cover up the Ricoh company name on a K-3 (or subsequent cameras so labeled).

Note: the shiny tape is more esthetically pleasing than the cloth version!

Not Rixoh? Ricox? Ritax?

I should email GGS and suggest them to make a screen that specifically covers the Ricoh sign so we can all be happy.
