I'll give Nena credit - It's better than many translated songs, where something is always sacrificed - rhyming, rhythm, or meaning. "Ninety-nine red balloons" just doesn't have the flow of "neunundneunzig luftballons"; starting every stanza with "ninety-nine" automatically loses a syllable and the bounce of the original.

Edit: According to Wiki, she and the band were never really happy with the English version, and she has never performed the English version live (in 30+ years and 500+ concerts).
Kinda nice to have heard the English version just so I know the lyrics somewhat, but I definitely prefer the "flow" of the original.

Jim

Can you afford it?

Although prices are not published, I would wager that these things cost considerably more than their commercial airliner cousins.

Nice little thing, but it doesn't have the reach I world need
The BBJ's have a published range of 8,000 to 10,000 miles, depending on the model and configuration. That should get you there, no problem.

But when a fillup is in the neighborhood of 63,000 gallons of jet fuel (for the 747 model), who can afford the fuel?

Aww - that's not quite fair. She's had numerous top-ten songs and albums, even in the past decade - all in German-speaking countries, of course.

That's the dude from Detroit that went to South Africa and cut like one album, then went home.

And became a legend in South Africa.

But didn't know it until just recently.

Thank you Clackers. I find I am out of touch on a lot of things. I pretty much left music behind when hip-hop/rap came along. I think it pretty much left me behind too. I'm sort of old school...I like to be able the hear and understand the words, and think they have some actual meaning that I can relate with.

Yeah! And we all thought he was dead, mean time, he was living life in Detroit as a builder. So, Was found some 20 years later and they flew him over to South Africa for a concert. And, for the first time he realised he was a major celebrity. When he got off the plane and saw the limo, he though "I wonder which celebrity was on the plane with us?" Mean time, it was for him!

Watch the doco Searching for Sugerman. Here's the trailer:

Rodigues's songs were a major inspiration during the Apartheid struggle.
