Down here in Texas if that was the case not even any pavement would be left by 6AM. Most other places in America might be the same. One thing we are not short on is criminals! Druggies and criminals.......interchangeable words.

The lady started to fidget and I turned to the guy and told him to cut the volume immediately. He gave me a go to hell look but did cut it. Then a controversial decision by the Supremes came on the big screen TV and the guy went ballistic. Cursing and threatening and standing and yelling at the TV. Once again I told him, cut the language or else. He asked what I was going to do......I told him keep it up and you'll see. He then told me he should kick my ass. Be my guest....assault on the elderly will get you an automatic 5 years in the slammer...but the worst part is what happens to you after I let you take the first swing.....so go for it. He opened the door and walked out. Where he went I don't know, the car was ready and I paid and left.
So that was you! Who knew?

Dang Mark, I'm gonna bookmark your local paper's website, fun reading!

"Two alleged car thieves, who took refuge from the law in a cow shed on an Eketahuna property, will face Palmerston North District Court next week.

The Napier couple in their early 30s had allegedly stolen a silver Nissan Pulsar and the plates from a different silver Nissan Pulsar in Napier and had broken down on Hamua-Rongamai Rd in Eketahuna, leaving the car.
Police Constable Donna Olliver said a farming couple from the area had noticed the deserted car and had called police.

"I went there and what we noticed was that there was a full box of beer, packet of smokes, full petrol can in the car and a whole lot of clothing, so we knew the culprits were still somewhere around the area," she said."

It's the box of beer that gave it away! What selfrespecting thief will leave a full box of beer?

Not from the front door of the station. They do drive around.

It was on the news recently that they were having trouble recruiting armed police because of the uncertain legal position of a police officer who actually uses the weapon. The bad guys very rarely have weapons because just having one massively escalates the penalty so it is rare for police to need weapons.

In our one local town, they have exactly one burglar. He's not very good, so he's often caught red-handed and locked up. When he gets out of jail, the local policeman sends out a message to the local businesses: "Lock up at night folks - 'You know who' is out of jail again."

They smelled the bacon frying at the old farm couple's place.......the only legitimate reason to leave your beer behind. A case where Bert's bacon hating would have prevented capture.

Many years ago when I got hired as the Town Marshall (yes, that actually was the official title) of a very small town here in South Dakota the magistrate that swore me in said "Go easy. We're too poor to afford a town drunk, so we take turns".

Lol, even though the doors of the station are locked after hrs, they are real good about patrolling the neighborhood, I see a patrol car at least twice a day in town sometimes and in the country area where our property is, there is a patrol car ( a jeep) that drives through at least once a day.

On my 5400 mile trip to and from Oregon I saw 6 cop cars total......there might have been others I missed, but that is all I saw. I did not check the local donut shops......which might have greatly increased that number? Only two of those six were highway patrol...and both of those were before we got out of Texas. Maybe this is why the highways are like demo derbies? Locally, all the cops are concentrated on the Loop...where the speed limit is 50mph and strictly enforced....a virtual writers cramp assignment for the local cops. The road is long and straight, no residential areas and few side roads......I think it was planned for violator income. Just personally, I have had three cases where people have passed me when I was going 50mph only to be stopped by a cop behind a tree and ticketed. Cruise control is your friend!

A few years ago I called the local sheriff's dept and asked to have an officer drop by for a local problem with speeders. I was told it was a busy night and it would be about 2 1/2 hours...but if I had an emergency they could knock an hour off that delay.

Is that it?

I see about that many each day here in Golden. A little town of about 5000 people...
