This is a dead end road.

Goes up to the summit of Mount Constitution on Orcas Island, an island in the San Juan Islands at the mouth of Puget Sound.

You get there by riding one of these:

This road has a start and end.

If you go 200 miles an hour, and cross the start and end 200 times and are the first one to cross the end the 200th time you win.

That would be 500 miles, all while the only stops are to get gas and change tires a few times. You don't get out when you stop for gas and tires either.

Nope.

In fact, the seat belts go over your shoulders, around your waist and between your legs. And you have multiple layers of Nomex coveralls on, a helmet, and there is a net over the window, so getting out is a bit of a chore.

Besides, the stop for fuel and tires only takes about 12 to 14 seconds.

You don't even get to stop and pee.

No snacks either.

While still on the road theme, although it's starting to look like a photo thread.
My wife was driving through Garden of the Gods in CO when I stuck my Pentax Q with fisheye out of the truck's window,

This is, believe it or not, a legal road. Google Maps
It is, what we call a "paper road" which is an unformed road or a road that has fallen into disrepair but which is still a perfectly legal road.

This is called Odlins Road even though that's not it's legal name. Originally, this carried quite a bit of traffic, as a logging road. Normal rights and road rules apply. Technically, this is a 100km/h road.

(Probably an Aussie at the head thinking he was driving on the 'right' side of the road.)

LOL, yes, only on paper!
Some part of this road has sheer drop-offs. Some years back, another 4wd driver got it wrong on the one corner and died. Because of the challenging conditions it's now best attempted with no less than 4 vehicles.

Mark, your story reminds me of some roads in the Adelaide hills. Col Light did the survey maps in England before he ever went to South Australia. Got all the legals of land use and ownership set up, which needed the Westminster parliament and civil service. There are still some road reserves with parallel fences a chain apart straight over cliffs etc because once declared as a road it is too hard to undeclare a road.

Speed limit signs are weird here. At Eynesham there is a 60mph sign just after the roundabout that goes to the Swinford (toll) Bridge, more about that another time, and 100 yards on, just around a bend and behind a bunch of trees, there is a 30mph limit sign. Same kind of thing happens very often at other places. Eynesham, never heard of it before?, in the 7th/8th century even had its own kings. One was the father of St Freidesweide after whom a large open space outside the Said Business School was named.
