At Eynesham there is a 60mph sign just after the roundabout that goes to the Swinford (toll) Bridge, more about that another time, and 100 yards on, just around a bend and behind a bunch of trees, there is a 30mph limit sign.

Speed trap.

But they do the idea of putting the present speed limit on a sign about 100 yards before a sign for a change. You can see it at Long Hanborough (where Winston Churchill's coffin was unloaded from the train during his funeral), Clanfield, North Leigh (the football (soccer) team of which played East Leigh in another county last weekend) and other places.

There are some speed limit signs set up because they view you as one of their profit centres.

This is the only straight stretch on the road that leads to our house.
The speed limit is 30 MPH, and it's downhill from each direction.
It's easy to coast at 45 or more, so county deputies like to hang out there occasionally, it's where I got my last ticket several years back.

I imagine rockets don't have number plates which can complicate things a bit...

One of our "Minuteman" rocket launches from the only approved launch-site on the east coast AFIK.
Resupply mission to the ISS BTW.

There are still some road reserves with parallel fences a chain apart straight over cliffs etc because once declared as a road it is too hard to undeclare a road.
.
Yup! We have some of those here too. And, some have been "driven" by the local 4wd clubs just for fun.

I wondered once: why not let it out to a private contractor for a percentage of the fines administered, with the contractor free to choose how many test stations and whether they move about etc. Pretty soon the contractor will work out the sweet spot of the number of stations to have so that the perceived probability of getting caught is high enough that most people drive at the right speed most of the time. But we do not want the fear of a fine so great that people drive at 10 or even 20 mph below the speed limit.

Here there seem to be three classes of drivers (other than those in steam driven machines and farm tractors and horse labelled trucks) those who drive at 10-20mph below the limit, those who do the speed limit and those who disappear in the distance very fast when you are doing the speed limit. The speed limit, or 5mph slower, group are, really, the majority but the slow ones feel like the majority, and fast ones are fairly common.

One driving habit here I have noticed is meant to be 'polite'. Stop to allow a car to enter the main road from the opposite side. There is no give way law that requires that, in fact the law actually stipulates the opposite. Very dangerous for the person behind the person who stops where there is no legal reason to predict they would stop.
