Are those MRE crackers a bit like old-fashioned "ship's biscuit"?
MRE cracker:
INGREDIENTS: Enriched Flour (Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Parially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (Contains Soybean and/or Cottonseed Oils), Salt, Leavening (Ammonium Bicarbonate, Baking Soda), Yeast, Calcium Carbonate, Malt.

Hardtack (ship biscuit/cracker) is flour, water, and sometimes salt.

Nope! My favourite part is the soldier fuels... or desert powders...

I actually don't mind MREs to much, I've gone a whole week eating nothing but them.

I remember a joke some comedian cracked whilst performing for soldiers in Iraq:

"I've had my fifth MRE so far, and none of them has an exit strategy."

Also, there's a Youtube channel where a Kiwi guy gets send MREs from around the world and tries all of them out. The final test is feeding them to his little daughter, who usually loves about 95% of the stuff.

Well, that's because it is plastic.

Living in Iowa I can believe that.

MRE crackers are to die from!

and I found Carr's to be just as bad.
The upper one looks like something out of a ration pack, with all that documentation of what out the chemical works was put into it because they ran out of other product ideas, so make the punters eat it, at least their big pile of it will go away.

Why do they have to write the mantra on the cup: "I'm loving it". Does that tell us that the the food alone is not enough to give the diner that idea?

That's why he said "to die FROM".

I've eaten my share of MREs when I was still on active duty. They're not bad. They fulfill the mission of getting a lot of calories into the body for fuel in a high-exertion environment. Taste is secondary to nutrition, but they're still pretty good (most of them). Or at least acceptable

But not as good as bacon... Dry and crispy *OR* moist and chewy!

That's very, very wrong on so many levels... actually, nine levels, it would appear...

----

My diet continues:

Breakfast - (very) small bowl of bran flakes with skimmed milk

Mid-morning - small gala apple

Lunch - two rice cakes, one slice of ham, one slice of Gouda cheese, some cucumber and carrot sticks

Afternoon snack - small pack of sliced biltong

Dinner (in about an hour) - not yet decided; maybe a little tuna and salad

Lots of chamomile tea...

And tonight, one of my 0.5% Brewdog Nanny State dark ales (which it turns out contains just 30 calories for the 330ml bottle!

The strange thing (to me) is, I'm actually starting to enjoy it - not the food, but the slightly hungry sensation. I know that might sound weird, but there it is! I'd like to exercise more, but my arthritis is preventing me from doing much more than a gentle walk...

Mike, sorry to hear of your enforced limited intake. Went to see the doctor last night, I was happy with the report.

He even had some P&R conversation with me that I shall not inflict of all of you.

Yesterday I received an hilarious email from a friend in US. One of his amusing comments related to a P&R matter that would get people both sides of the sea really worked up - even if I were only to mention the subject.

I hear you brother!
Mine is much better today after the weather front, with rain, passed through yesterday.
Sunny and 60F today, and I'm currently smoking a 3 lb. slab of maple sugar and cinnamon bacon using apple wood for smoke.
Pics tomorrow.
