Side effects of all those rice cakes no doubt.

Yeah, I think I'd rather eat broken glass than another rice cake

However, I've discovered that I can make a nice sandwich with "Warburtons Thins" - a tasty, thin, pre-sliced flat bread roll that has about 100 calories. So I've been enjoying pastrami, light cheese, cucumber and mustard sandwiches of late, each one about 200 calories in total... yummy

Ah, yes, rice cakes. A culinary marvel.
The only known food (a very loose application of the term) that is totally devoid of flavor.

My kids used to love rice cakes. I tried one and decided that moldy, soggy card-board was more to my liking!
Happy New Year!

I close my year on PF with a tiny gift - my favourite rice cake recipe for you to enjoy:

One large slice of Torchon ham
One slice of low-fat Edam cheese (or similar)
One slice of Prosciutto
Three thin slices of pickled beetroot
A couple of very thin cucumber slices
A small drizzle of dijon mustard, honey and lemon-juice dressing, and...
... hold the rice cake.

Happy New Year, everyone. See you on the flip side

I haven't done my share lately of bringing this thread to 40.000 posts (which should be the aim for our 4th anniversary, no?). My apologies. A lot of travelling to see family this week, then falling sick for a few days. Hoping to be all good before going on vacation to lands afar where European SIM cards don't work (no, not the US of A ). Which means not much participation from me over the next two weeks or so either. I suppose there will be some wifi zones available, maybe even with reasonable speeds now that they finally got a fibre cable connected, but I plan on being too busy relaxing to do much posting anyway Leaving the day after tomorrow, and no packing has been done yet. Oh well...

Right, almost forgot: Happy New Year!!

Have a cigar.

Light some fireworks.

Toss back a shot or three of something distilled.

Kiss Mrs. Racer for two years straight.

Wake up tomorrow just like any other day.

Happy New Year.

By the way, it is already tomorrow in New Zealand.

Hope is pretty much a goner ...

That is very sad but as I have been listening to news over the last couple of decades I keep on hearing about all kinds of bad things, such as youth suicide. Without discounting the effect of severe mental health problems some people suffer, I have often been left wondering the extent to which that problem related to an absence of deep-seated hope that can hold people through the various things that happen, and that can give a reason for living.

Well, yes, I'd do the same. But - to me, at least - acquired taste applies when the flavours are odd but there's one or more elements that compel you to try more... and more... even though you still think, overall, it's a bit weird

I can think of lots of things I wouldn't have described as outright-delicious the first time I tried them - real beer, dry wines, spirits, blue cheeses, truffles, raw oysters, cooked snails, certain types of sashimi, bone marrow, steak tartare, etc. - but I'd crawl over broken glass for any of those right now
I have found that as time has passed my palate has 'matured' with the result that I can like thins that go way beyond the original flavour range I had when I was young.

I follow a rule in trying new to me foods, if lots of people like this, from anywhere, it cannot be too bad, and the worst that will happen is that I decide I do not like it. The result is that I have some things that are not bad but I am bemused by the massive enthusiasm expressed by my friends, and also things that I find I really like.

Does that work with bacon, leaving out all the poncy stuff?

LOL

With a few minor changes to the recipe, it would definitely work. Simply leave out the Torchon ham, Edam cheese, Prosciutto, beetroot, cucumber and the dressing. Substitute those with the bacon, a couple of thick slices of fresh white bread and a smearing of ketchup or HP brown sauce.

All sorted

No, just practicing Still twenty-some years to go. In the meantime I make the most of the too-short vacations and spend all my money on travelling to places most people don't go. It's a win-win you see. I get to see something different from home, and I don't have any money left to spend on a K-3
