In general I think the WRC guys are better at estimating the right cornering speed. But then they cheat with 4 wheel drive

That should be read as "cheat" with big quotation marks. I'm a big fan of 4WD - makes life soooo much easier on slippery roads.

And they certainly know how to utilise those resources to the fullest, no matter how many wheels are pulling them along!

I used 4wd from 82 to 13 and thought it was great stuff

i'm driving an awd at controllable speeds on the back roads that would have killed me in my trucks
even offroad it's not a hindrance

the trucks all topped at around 90-100mph and weren't particularly stable over 80
this car just clips along
first thing I have ever driven that I don't actually know its top end

maybe because an old fat guy has more sense in his dotage?

but yes snow and speed...wheeee!!!

Did she also tell you that you get the best images right next to a tornado?
She said it was calm in the middle and I should get in there to photograph.

Cheating?

How can it be cheating? Making use of a pair of tires and wheels that otherwise do noting more than hold up one end of the car is resourceful, innovative and smart.

Technically it is AWD, not 4WD. 4WD is a system that has a transfer case with the ability to operate in either 2WD or 4WD.

AWD vehicles have no driver selectable options, but rather are always sending engine output to all wheels (albeit via limited slip center and axle differentials).

That's not quite accurate.
I had a 1979 Chevy full time 4WD. It had a transfer case, but there was no 2WD operation. The transfer case had a differential in it. It operated in Hi, Hi Lock, N, Low, and Low Lock.

That sounds quite similar to the Landrover Discovery and Rangerover system. For a while they killed the locking function, then they brought it back again. Now on the modern ones - I don't know. Too much electronics in modern vehicles!

It drove really well on snow, ice, mud, etc. The downside was the 9-10 miles per gallon on the highway.

My company work truck was a 4WD Chevy Suburban.
I only got stuck once, in mud, to where I needed to be towed out.
The tow truck got stuck and we both had to get a tow.

I put over 200K on my last Suburban before I retired and never had any major components replaced or repaired, just tires, filters, etc.
We did keep up on maintenance.

Speaking of long lasting my HHR is up to 264,500 miles. I did have to replace the alternator a couple weeks ago, but that's it other than maintenance items.

197K on my 2000 Dodge Ram...runs perfectly, uses no oil, everything works. Very little repairs other than regular maintenance. I do use only Mobil One synthetic oil in all my vehicles...have since 1972.

Sure am liking those new fender flares!

Her wells are natural gas....and she uses Mobil One too! Better gas mileage and cheaper than conventional oil...in the long run...fewer oil changes and better protection in hot Texas weather.

I could tell you how I got hooked on Mobil One in 1972, but it is a long story and I am dead dog tired from a long day of accompanying Mrs Rupert to her Doc in Ft Worth. Her colonoscopy thingy is coming up in two weeks...her first was 10 years ago.
My first ...and last ...was about 6 years ago. I'm pretty touchy about people playing around in my butt. They can cut out hemorrhoids, but that's as far as I want to go...

Regards!

Synthetic engine oils still have petroleum based stocks that the 'synthetic' oil is made from.
