One more day and done, after nearly 50 years as a working gal, 25 at her current company.
I don't know of anyone more deserving.
Nice Bob!
When Mrs. Racer retired from the PUD (the electric utility that I also worked at for 30 years) after 18 years of service, her closest coworkers got her flowers, a card and some cake.
The company?
Her supervisor handed her the retirement 'gift' shook her hand, inspected the box of personal belongings to ensure she wasn't stealing pens, pencils and paper, and had security escort her out the door.
I had big things in store for her though.
Using a ruse of having to fix something on her car, I drove her to work that day.
In advance I had arranged for a limo so I could pick her up in style form her last day at work. I had the driver hold back and park up the street where I could see when she was escorted out. Her coworkers were all there too, giving hugs and saying goodbyes.
She noticed I wasn't there and called on the cell.
I had the driver pull up and as I was trying to explain my tardiness the other gals noticed the limo. I stepped out and she nearly dropped her box of stuff. I had a huge bouquet of roses and she had a huge hug for me.
The minimum for the car was 2 hours, so we went for a drive through the countryside, then out to a waterfront place for dinner.
This earned me a keep out of the doghouse card that lasted for a long time.
As for the PUD, it wasn't the same company I started at back in the late 1970's. Even though there were still about the same number of employees, the close knit family atmosphere was gone. It went from a government job setting to a government agency that was trying to emulate a 'corporation'. The employee resources department became a den of witch hunters, bent on driving the union out.
That is the primary reason why I left when I did. I could have stayed, but 30 years in a stated pension is enough, and I have a second pension now through Boeing. When I finally hang it up I will have a nice combination of pensions to augment the Social Insecurity and Medicare.
4 years, 5 months, 3 weeks, 2 days.
Or sooner, I can start drawing my state pension anytime.
But who's counting?
