the farm wife that taught me to clean cottontails never used a knife

squeeze the innards south
raise dinner above your head
slam your forearms against your thighs...everything inside is now outside
pull the skin off
break off the feet
twist off the head
rinse the carcass

I have to tell you that watching this woman efficiently perform these tasks in less time than it takes to read them was amazing

cook the rabbit whole

no knife until it was served

if you want to know how to dress your easter carp, a gruff old german farmer taught me that as well

Yeah. They tried that here. Problem was, the rabbits went underneath.
They should have buried it some.

Does the Great Pumpkin know about this?

Of course... I was just mentioning the paragraph about the belly and bacon...
Its OK.

Settle down.

Keep in mind he spent his days surveying the woods of the Show Me state. Probably had to skin many a rabbit while wandering in the dark Missouri woods lugging one of those funny looking 3 legged crutches around. Worked up a powerful hunger, Bob and his survey party. A few rabbits dispatched handily with that 3 legged crutch, deftly dressed and quickly roasted over a fire made from freshly hacked up oak or dogwood, whatever happened to be laying around, hacked up with the same machete he cut a swath into the woods with.

True story.

And you read it here first, on the internet.

They call this the Devils' Slide too. I prefer the "Giant Slab of Bacon" myself. The first time I saw it, I was really hungry and it reminded me of a slab of bacon.
And now you will never think of it as anything but bacon.

Is that a bad thing?

She's someone's wife?! That's one lady you don't want to upset. Imagine getting into an argument with her...

when I was 9 or 10 we had some neighbors from back east
they spoke with that twangy generic accent, you get from southern ohio to north texas
they were very pale and all the youngin's had black hair, all the old ones gray

twice a year a truck full of chickens would show up and this extended family would have a slaughtering party
knives, axes, sticks, strong wrists were used to begin the fete
trash cans full of boiling water for plucking
fires for singeing
tables for the youngest to wrap at

the only involvement males had was men drinking beer and boys chasing down runaway poultry and being covered in arterial spray

I have no idea how many chickens they dressed but the families' cars would have trunkfuls of paper-wrapped poultry when they pulled out

brutal, crude, efficient...I am still more afraid of hatchet-wielding grannies than clowns

Close enough that I'll swear to it.

We lived in town but would visit our country kin and fresh chicken was usually on the menu for dinner.
Mom, raised on a farm, would grab one of their chickens by the head, and with a swift snap of her wrist render it flopping around on the ground, headless.
A wash (pronounced warsh) tub was then placed over it to help contain the mess in the yard.
I feel sorry for anyone that's never eaten freshly deceased fried chicken.

On another note, week one of Mrs Bob's retirement has passed and we're still married and speaking to each other.
It's been a little like Ground Hog Day, every day felt like Saturday.
The week seemed longer than normal, so that's a good thing.

as I've mentioned I retired in my forties
my wife and I were on the same page about it and for the most part no resentments...other than i'm still too lazy to live

one of my co-workers retired to his stay-at home wife
after a month he was given a choice...he is still working at lowe's

so treat this like a honeymoon and be on your best behavior until a sense of normality is firmly entrenched

she was a friend's aunt
I met her on one of my first lame attempts at hunting
there were some harsh words about...you killed it, what are you gonna do with it?

regarding bob's observation...
my maternal grandmother was a sweet and thoughtful woman
almost a Norman Rockwell version of "grandma"

however, when it was time for fowl to be converted to dinner...well, sweet and thoughtful weren't what I thought
