Slight clarification, here...
As with many words, the pronunciation largely depends on one's regional accent and strength of it. Those from the South of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would pronounce "butty" with a short "uh", as in "shut" or "cut". Here in the North East and Northern England generally, those with stronger accents pronounce it with a short "oo", as in "foot". The pronunciation of the "tt" part differs regionally, too - it is glottalized here in the North East, but not - for example - in Yorkshire.
So... I'm glad we've dealt with this important matter...
Edit: Actually, the "y" is also affected by pronunciation... "ee", "ih" or "eh" depending on the accent. In fact, now I come to think of it, only the "b" is consistent across all UK accents
