Technically cadets is funded by DND, which in turn is funded by taxes...

About that. Not a Raleigh, but I got it at K-Mart for less than $100.

Wore the tires out a couple of times, replaced the brake pads once, and I'm on my 4th seat.
After nearly 20 years of selling and, more relevant to this, servicing bicycles; a $100.00 <x>mart bike is over priced by $99.98, relative to what it's worth.
Do yourself a favor. Find a bike shop and test ride an actual bicycle.

I don't pay taxes.

I'm a low life miscreant who harbours certain feelings about the Gov'mint and what they do with that money. Now let's move on before I have to ban myself for talking about things political . . . . . . .

You can take the bicycle man out of his shop, but you can't take the bicycle salesmanship out of him.

But does a drive like that deliver enough torque to actually be an advantage?
Supposedly, somewhere between 60 and 200 watts, which is enough to make a difference in a tightly contested race. So far, only one rider has been caught, and that was in a cyclocross race, not a road race.

Someone mentions 200 watts and I don't think bike... I think one of these (yeah, let's rock!):

I bought that bike over 37 years ago and it is still a perfectly rideable bike today. I know, it is on the heavy side. But it works great.

Pretty sure I got my money's worth.

I have ridden the nicer bikes, and may someday get one. There is a difference. Was looking at recumbent bikes just the other day in fact.

Don't ride it much, do you?

I wish mine had an odometer on it. I have tried to ride the wheels off of mine.
