My connection this morning is 2.87mbps upload and 0.17mbps download.

That sucks.

You guys with mega bandwidth connections suck.

Just now ran a wifi test, 55 Mbps download, 6 Mbps upload.
Guess that's good, not tech savvy enough to know.
Thats good......it is what I get on my wireless office computer. Phone service is excellent too...and so cheap compared to AT&T. I get all three for around $135 as month. When I had AT& T my phone alone was often $80-90 a month, so this is cheap service!

Hey, your job in life is to be "Grill Savvy". We can't all cover every base, you know! You just stick to the grilling and all will be fine!

Regards!

Yep, sucks Big Time! By the time you uploaded a K1 pixel shift photo, the K1 would be obsolete and you would be in your old age.....and have long forgotten you even took the shot.

There is a place nearby, not the typical CO, no building. Just a couple concrete pads with large cabinets back off the road far enough to limit exposure to errant drunks. The telco is always there, fiddling around. I suspect it is a stripped down version of the CO. As you mention there is a distance limit.

So I just used Google Earth to measure the distance, and it is about 2.3 miles.

This is a screen grab from Google Earth Street View:

A couple neighbors have the satellite dish internet. I know one for sure is not pleased with the speeds he is getting, and he is really unhappy because he ditched the ADSL for it thinking it would be better. I've looked at the plans available and it doesn't look any better than what I have now.
the box in front is a SAC box...up to 900 pair in/1800 pair out(distribution)
the box in the back is just a splice closure
the small square box could be anything
the squarish box in front looks like a SLC (subscriber loop carrier/digital local service)
it is fed by carrier (at least a T1) so 24 ckts @64kbps per channel /1.544 mbps for 24 channels
the original SLCs carried 96 voice grade ckts...so a SLC96
the output is cable that goes to the SAC box and is then cross connected to the local cables going to the subscribers

tim is correct, line length is everything on copper
which is why fiber is so popular
capacity and speed
not to put too fine a point on it
the SLC box in your photo has up to 900 voice ckts
a single fiber has 28 T!s at 24 ckts each

ADSL is a datastream superimposed on a voice ckt then filtered and separated at the user end
years ago two voice ckts could share a cable pair using a thing called an AML

your phone number will tell you a lot about the eqpt hierarchy
country code...north America is 1
npa......area code...tandem switch
nxx......local exchange or CO...serving office...local switch
xxxx.....last four numbers are assigned randomly unless purchased in blocks

with local number portability that is not as true as it once was
my car dealer moved fifteen miles west of his original location
however he bought a block of numbers from an exchange fifteen miles further west of that
the reason...cachet and perception

I know more about this stuff but I've been trying to forget it for almost twenty years now

I dumped Direct TV about 4 years ago. It hit $75 a month and since I used so little of it why pay to have an endless stream of advertisement beamed into the house? I really haven't missed it. Right now I simply use whatever the antenna can pick up. That gives me about 30 channels. I am old enough to remember when cable TV first came out. Everybody said why pay for TV when you can get it for free? Cable's answer was that on cable TV the shows would be commercial free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I held off so long dumping AT&T since I couldn't get a straight answer as to whether a VoIP service would work with my pacemaker phone checks, and it does!
Also Spectrum allows you to block up to 80? phone numbers.

Growing up in a town in SE MO we had one channel, CBS.
We moved to St Louis in 1961 where we got 4 channels and thought we were in television heaven.

Had a lecturer with a one liner for that: "many days and no useful work".

Before the switch from analog to digital we could get the 3 main channels, ABC, NBC and CBS, the local public broadcasting channel, KCTS (PBS), FOX, a local independent KCTS, and on a good day on or two Canadian channels out of Vancouver.

We are about 50 to 60 miles from the Seattle off air channel towers.

With the new and improved digital signal we get nothing. The signal is perfect for the first 30 miles, then it drops to zero at 31.

Gee, thanks to the men and women in Washington DC who think the new game works for the benefit of all.

So cable (which stops about 1 mile from my home) or satellite are my only options.

Every time I think I've had enough and I'm ready to pull the plug the racing season starts.

The telco has both overhead (visible in the photo) and underground along that stretch of road. I believe the cabinets there are all tied into the underground trunk.

Sounds like "alternative math"......I hear it is very popular in some circles?

BTW- Amazon stock is still a good buy....Mrs Rupert's is up over $150 a share and my Mom's well over $200. (Since October) New Target Price is $1120. I have no doubt it will get there.

Of course...you never really know for sure, do you?

Regards!
