The longest flight I've ever been on was New York to Bangkok, 17 hour and way to many extra minutes. We flew eastward over Europe, Russia and China. Once that leg of the trip was done we had another 6 hrs of traveling to go. Coming back we continued eastward over the pacific to land back in New York, ended up circumnavigating the globe on that trip. (the things parents do for their children)

I don't mind being a passenger on an airplane but that long being folded into a big cigar tube is a bit much. After about 8 hrs on both legs I reverted to my childhood and kept asking myself if we were there yet.

Well, there was the Fairchild prop plane. A real small cigar tube, that one. Fairchild must have thought all the passengers ere semiconductor devices, nice and small and not in need of space to move. To unload, the back passenger had to get off first, or the plane would topple back.

Wind turbines are popping up in KS and CO like prairie dogs, a hell of a lot more than our last trip out in 2013.
I was curious about the cost per unit and found this:
"Most of the commercial-scale turbines installed today are 2 MW in size and cost roughly $3-$4 million installed."
Some of the wind farms stretched for miles, I grabbed this shot in KS of just a few.

edit to add, The wind was kicking ass on our way back, but these things seem to spin at the same speed no matter the velocity.

Same here in Texas.... "Feb 20, 2017 - Texas has 11,592 turbines and an installed wind capacity of 20,321 ... With many rural communities feeling the benefits of wind energy, .. Texas produces the most wind power of any U.S. state. Wind power accounted for 12.63% of the electricity generated in Texas in the 12 months ending Oct 2016."

Of course, now that we have learned that clean "King Coal" is back, to supply millions of new jobs, they will most likely start disassembling these turbines....you reckon?

Regards!

Thanks, I'll pass.

Planes are boring, really boring. Airports are flat out life draining.

Why can't they invent teleporting? Or, slightly less improbable, gravity trains? Or at least implement Hyperloops?

Still, I enjoy going places. Or rather, I enjoy being places. It's the going I generally don't enjoy.
Life's a journey.

Enjoy the ride.

The speeds the blades turn is by design. Engineers worked out the optimum size and weight to make the best use of the wind.

The blades turn a reduction gear, which in turn rotates the generator. It may look like they are turning slowly, but the generator is turning the speed required to make electricity.

You might also notice that sometimes the wind will be blowing but the blades aren't turning. This is because they use a complex algorithm to balance the productivity of each windmill over time to get the most from each one over its lifetime.

A lot more to wind energy that one sees while driving by.

Are you suggesting I have trouble reading? Dyslexic or something? I know I did not spell very well till I left primary school. I was deliberately stirring the teachers by pedantically following the spelling rules they taught us.

Should I feel most offended and go away in a huff of high dudgeon?

Would I do that?
