Delicious... but that's a fairly meagre breakfast

Well I am re reading David McCullough's biography of John Adams. I think I have found the reason for his success and status as one of our Founding Father's. A passage from one of his diaries he wrote as a young man is quoted. It goes as follows "I find myself imitating Otis." That should give "old Rupert" a smile if he is in human heaven or he will start one heck of a party if in squirrel heaven. .

I eat other stuff too, for breakfast. But only one tomato each day.

One tomato alone would leave me thinking it was rather meagre, not mega.

I usually eat my ta matas raw in a salad, or by themselves like an apple.

Yep, straight from the garden with salt.

The only way.

At about 12 years old we moved to Oregon in preparation for my dad retiring from the Navy. For 3 months we lived in the pickup camper parked at the farm of a family he grew up with near Stayton. There was a huge garden near the farmhouse, with lots of ta mata plants, loaded with big, juicy ta matas.

I spent a good deal of time each day sitting among the plants, with a salt shaker, picking those juicy red orbs and chomping them down. Fortunately there were lots of them, and the lady of the house never complained of my gluttony.

I ate so many that I had cankers in my cheeks.

I say ta-mata.

I suppose I should have given a pronunciation for this.

It is ta (the a sounds like ah) ma (the a here sound like a) ta (again, like the first one ah).

So long a, short a, long a.

OK everyone, say it with me, ta mata.

Now go eat some. They are good for you.
