I remember, years back, as a kid, my Dad gave a ride to a hitch-hiker... He was a US Army guy stationed over here, and on his way up to Scotland (if I recall the story correctly, it was to see a friend or girlfriend). He wanted to get to Musselburgh, which we'd pronounce "Muh-sel-bruh". My Dad was tickled by his pronunciation of "Moose-el-berg"

Our languages are so similar, and yet so different. But, then, even different regions here in the UK (just as in Canada and the US, and - I'd guess - every country in the world) have their own pronunciations and terms... It's one of the things about language that I really love

I love dialects. I've just read about the merger of the vowels in the words "Mary", "marry", and "merry" in most North American dialects. It seems quite a number of people would say "hurry" rhymes with "furry", too. Fascinating.

You can move to Sequim (pronounced "Skwim"), out on the peninsula.

Lowest rainfall in the state. The town is in a rain shadow, sheltered by the Olympic Mountains. Less rain than anywhere in the high desert of Eastern Washington.

Lidia's is a fascinating story. She came to the US as a refugee in WWII. Her first cooking experiences were as a young girl, in the US, discovering and preparing boxed cake mixes.
