Many years ago, when I was flying to job sites instead of driving like I do now, I was headed home from Denver. It was an uneventful flight but we seemed to be taking for ever to descend and land. I happened to have a window seat and noticed the terminal going by with us at about the control tower height (maybe 75 feet or so). The terminal is about midway on the runway to give this some perspective. The next thing we knew we hit the ground HARD and bounced a couple of times, not quite as hard but we were glad the landing gear was built stoutly.
I'm pretty certain we needed to use the rest of the runway to stop since we turned onto the taxi way at the end after a very rapid deceleration, still going pretty fast. (Wasn't quite a drift into the turn but darned close.)
The flight attendant announced our arrival with … "As you may have noticed we've hopped into Raleigh. Please remain seated until we come to a full stop at the terminal, at which time you may collect everything you lost out of your pockets."
In those days the pilot would routinely come out of the cockpit and thank passengers for flying with them. This time the cockpit door stayed closed and there was no appearance.
