You could have lent someone lentils for Lent.

Couldn't you?
I suppose I could! It's actually easier working nights because the cafeteria is closed. Know what they serve on Fridays? Fish or... fish!

Thank you. But I'm well aware of that. I grew up here with Mardi Gras. I'm not Catholic, but many people I work with are. I join them in Lenten fasting. (It's actually easier to give something up for Lent than it is to answer at least 10 people daily why I don't fast for Lent! )
I figured you knew. My comment was for people who might not have put two and two together. What used to be common knowledge regarding religious practice is becoming more esoteric every day. Mardi Gras is a good example. Almost everyone in the U.S. knows that it is a festival marked by excess. Few people outside of those raised Catholic or Anglican know the association with Lent.

Odd how some traditions become nothing more than a generic excuse to party, run wild and nekkid, consume mass quantities, and act like complete dimwits.

Until this discussion here I must have been living under a rock.

I had no idea that Mardi Gras had a connection to Catholicism.

'cept Lentils were named for their lens-like shape. The English word "Lent" has germanic roots and refers to lengthening day length in Spring. So, while lentils might be acceptable for Lent, the are actually the favored food for photographers.

It's part of Alabama history here. You're required to take Alabama history in the 4th & 9th grades here.

I believe most states have state history as part of the public school curriculum. For me it was Oregon when I lived there, then Washington (state) when I lived there.

I'm pretty sure that's the case.

I think I'm gonna give up caffeine for Lent. I might not be very friendly for a week or two!

I used to consume so much coffee that the caffeine no longer did what it was supposed to do. So I quit drinking coffee. After many years of abstaining I reached a point where having a cup now and then would produce the desired effect.

Which was to wake up, be more alert, feel more energetic.
