Speaking of union contracts, my union announced a 14¢ an hour cost of living pay increase beginning September 6. Based on the consumer price index for Seattle, a couple times a year it is checked, and our contract provides for a pay increase based on that index.

The one last spring was only 1¢ an hour, but since I hired in 5 years ago the CPI COLA increases have raised the base rate by more than $5 an hour.

Here, for employers who offer paid time off, it typically isn't available until after a probationary period, either 6 or 12 months. Then only a beginning amount is given, a week or two. Then after some years of service are accumulated, more time is given. Some companies limit how much unused vacation can be carried over year to year, others do not, and of those that limit carryover, some cash out unused excess, others just let it evaporate.

Here it's 4 weeks leave, after one year of employment. Probationary period usually 3 months, but annual leave kicks in after 12 months. Plus, there's sick leave (5 days), bereavement leave (3 days per death, however many you need), maternity / paternity leave (22 weeks, 26 weeks from next year) and domestic violence leave (10 days). These kick in after 6 months / 12 months.

Here it's more like the NZ way. The first year you have the right to take five weeks but they're not paid - unless you come from another job, then you get your pay from them. Sick leave is, I think, 24 days, bereavement leave as in NZ, and 3 days also for sudden serious illness in close family, maternity/paternity leave is 12 months (mum and dad must each take at least 14 weeks (or lose those 14 weeks), the rest is devided as the couple sees fit) - the same goes for adoptions.

Or there's nothing. Like if you work for yourself.

Ah, but we (currently) have a king (and a queen, but she has no constitutional role). Not that anybody knows when his birtheday is. And no, it's not a public holiday.

Here, at the place I work, some other places are different, it is 30 days per year to be used by 31/December of the year it is earned (or pro-rate if starting during the year). If unused it evaporates. The argument is that the holiday is for the benefit fo your health, not as a way to get extra pay by working real time for wages and getting paid for the notional time of the 'holiday'. After some year one gets 'long service leave', an extra 3 days per year, following the same rules.
