In fact, the Bic pen model shot from a rifle that could still write.
Remember several years back when Bic, and other disposable lighters, had reportedly exploded?
My late best friend was an Army Special Forces Sergeant and said they tried forty ways from Sunday to blow one up, they couldn't.
Their high hopes were dashed because they like blowing things up, especially by using improvised everyday items.

As it was pointed out a few days back, today marks two years since Rupert's passing. It's hard to believe that it's been that long already, and I imagine he would be well pleased with the progress that we have made in this thread...

I just remember, with a smile, his love for all the backyard creatures, great and small:
Jim Williams was a great presence on these forums. There is a huge hole where he used to be.

Rest in peace my friend.

"Tyres". Just plain old "tyres".

(I think mine are "Continental")

So, Mike, the name of the first maker on pneumatic tyres doesn’t become the default name of the product, as Mr Macintosh became? Or the name of the first vulcaniser of rubber, either?

It is interesting how Hoover became a verb, isn’t it? Noone that I know of Bic’s or Biro’s a letter.

Good point. With pneumatic tyres, I guess the inventors could have chosen to name their version of tyres after themselves - but they didn't. Hey, I don't make the rules

Indeed. I tend to say I'm going to "vac" the carpets, but I know a lot of folks who use "Hoover" as a verb.

"Xerox" is another one... "Could you Xerox these documents for me?". Trademark names for drugs are often used to describe the generic medication, too...

I only know one lady who hoovers the floor - and she is a dinky-di Aussie - it must be a family thing.
I have never heard anyone use xerox as a verb and I have worked in offices all my working life. I was 21 or 22 when I first saw a photocopier - but it wasn't a Xerox and I can't remember ever working in an office with a Xerox machine.

I do remember Roneograph duplicators

I believe "Ski-Doo" is commonly used for snowmobiles, too?

I'm trying to find examples of the same phenomenon in Norwegian. Insulated drink bottles are invariably called "thermos" (usually norweginised to "termos"), and a stickynote is most often called post-it. And some may refer to smartphones and tablets as iphones and ipads no matter what brand they are. I'm sure there are more, but it's not something we do a lot.

Tires; work tires me out.
My car (auto) is fitted with Tyres.
Coopers sell Cooper tires in Australia - when they sell Cooper tyres I will know that they are meant for my car and not for bed.

I guess it will stop in not too long
