The only thing I have to make today is the ham. It will go on the Weber around 14:00 with cherry wood for smoke.
The crowd starts arriving around 15:00, shooting for dinner around 17:00.

Merry Christmas to all, I love you guys, you know, in a manly man way.

And let’s hope he washes his hands between the two tasks, eh?
I wore rubber gloves for the cleaning, and still I scrubbed my hands with anti-bacterial wash before food prep

That's it. I really am finished now... Veg all prepared, save for a couple of onions that I'll cut into wedges when I'm ready to put the pork shoulder in the oven

Dining table all set, too. I have my Mum to thank for this - I take no credit. She had an idea to use the Cretan table covering (actually a huge shawl) I brought back for her from my vacation a year or two back. I think it works well

Looking good Mike, so you're all ready for me to arrive in about 15 min?

Beautiful, Mum did a bang up job!
The place mats look like thin slabs of wood, are they, or are they supposed to look like they are?

Thanks, Bob, I'll let her know - she'll be delighted

I always thought they were real wood, but I checked just now and they're actually synthetic, with a cork matt backing. They're cleverly patterned and rather convincing - each one is slightly different. My Mum's had them for many years (if I recall, since I was a teenager), and they look no different now to when they were new...

They're super cool!

Mrs Bob has our tables set, the one in the dining room only holds 8, others will dine at the table in the kitchen area.

What a lovely, inviting room, Bob... looks like a proper traditional country home. Mrs Bob's done you proud

Your dining table only holds 8? Great Scott, man - how ever do you manage?! Mine only holds six when it's extended (or maybe eight very slim folks )... four in its current state, in relative comfort...

Did you miss the bit about the Swedish general called Pfuhl?

You gave up too early kid. It really is an epic novel.

Another you might be interested in: To Hell And Back, by Audie Murphy.

A very good account of one man's experience up to, and participating in the assault on Normandy, D Day, and the advance across the continent against the Germans.

I first read it at 12, I think. Scared the Hell out of me.

I've re-read it several times since, and seen the movie.

Good stuff.

Maybe I'll give it another try, it was a few years back.

To Hell and Back looks good. Added to my list.
