As well as a large portion of the population in the Pacific Northwet.
So I have been influenced by them, and even speak a tiny bit of the language.
When I was a kid I would spend all July and August down at the lake...plus all weekends from Victoria Day (3rd weekend of May) to September long weekend in a state park in Northern Minnesota. Got to know a lot of wonderful Americans...both adults and kids. Went fishing, exploring, swimming...you name it. I figure I have spent about 18 months of my life living in Minnesota and I enjoyed every minute of it.
In that part of the state the population was of Scandinavian background...Norwegian, Swedish for the most part. Back in the late '50's, early '60's there were still some older Minnesotans that had been born in Norway/Sweden and they spoke accented English and there were always a few Scandinavian words slipped into conversations, which after awhile I was able to pick up. Uff da was the most common that I recall, and that word triggers very pleasant memories of the idyllic summers spent at Lake Bronson ...up north in Minnesota.
As Bob Hope used to say...thanks for the memories.
