In my family it was, thanks for the invite... but no thanks. Of course that assumes you hadn't moved to Canada. I'm pretty sure the DAR doesn't include foreigners.
In 1786, my ancestors came to Canada...Niagara region I believe. They had a farm and a number of mills in that area. I'm sure there are still many relatives out there, that share my DNA, living in the states and for that matter Ontario.
However, my end of the family followed Horace Greeley's words of wisdom when he advised "Go West, young man..." and left southern Ontario and went to western Canada in the late 1870's , bought land and farmed. Yeah, I know old Horace was advising Americans when he told them to go west, but the advice was good for Canadians too, in that era.
My folks were United Empire Loyalists. I've never explored the SAR or DAR stuff. You're probably right though, as non Americans i would say we wouldn't qualify.
Good move on your French ancestor's part, about deciding to stay in America after the war. Being a cousin of Marie Antoinette and therefore very likely an aristocrat, he could of followed cousin Marie to the guillotine....during the French Revolution. And if that had happened....who knows...there might never of been a Normhead in the Pentax forum.

About 25 years ago, the government in my province decided that they were going to cut out history in grades 10, 11 and 12. The provincial, military veterans association were quite rightly upset and made an uproar about this and the government of the time quickly left that hot potato alone.
Who was it that said .....“Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.”
OK ....all you guys out there who got an A in history..
...should know the answer to this question.
But I'm going to make it a pop quiz...and here are the rules....no checking books, no fast looks on the internet, no one time phone call to a 'friend' who you think knows the answer !
You either know it...or you don't !
There are a few famous in history, who this quote was attributed to, so I am willing to give some leeway with your answers.
