I'm a bit surprised that the estimate isn't even higher. According to the same Wikipedia article "Norway : In 2009, there were a winter population of around 120,000." - and the area of Canada is about 30 times larger than Norway.

If you want to learn a bit of Czech, try this:

"Strč prst skrz krk"

Yes, it is a valid sentence, just ask Google

Edit: Or one a bit longer...
"Chrt pln skvrn zdrhl skrz drn chrp v čtvrť Krč, prv zhltl čtvrthrst zrn"

Count the vowels.

I remember a slightly different variant to that from when I grew up in England:

"I'm not pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's mate
And I'm only plucking pheasants 'cus the pheasant plucker's late!."

There was also:

"Mrs. Fuddywoody had a square cut punt, not a punt cut square but a square cut punt.
Mrs. Fuddywoody had a square cut punt!"

And:

"Mary had a little lamb, she kept it in a bucket
And every time that lamb got out the bull-dog used to ...............
Put it back in again!"

Yeah right!

Some place in West Africa, not sure what date. But the slums like that are typical of all third world countries, African, South American, India.

We really need a universal language, I vote for American English.

The version I heard was,
I'm a pheasant plucker, I only pluck mother pheasants.
I'm a very pleasant mother pheasant plucker.

Czech is more intuitive. By far.

I think we should find a universal lingua franca that is fair to all. That is, a language spoken by few and not in family with any other language. Euskara/Basque could be a candidate, but with closer to a million native speakers not ideal. Some extinct language could work, but there might be complications with reconstructing a language nobody knows how to speak...

So my vote goes to Laal, a language without any known relations to other living languages and spoken only in three villages in the south of Chad - less than 1,000 people in all.

I don't know if they have any interesting kinds of food, though.

Right?

As far as moose estimates go in Canada, I think the one I provided was based on govt. sources., which I'm wary about. For example our provincial govt. dept. gives the wolf population here, at around 4000 or so and there was a private company from the states that has a very good rep that did an air survey that indicated the #'s for the wolf population in our province are more like 10,000 +. This was a couple of years ago. These numbers are significantly different. Who is right ? I dunno. Perhaps maybe the correct number is somewhere in between, but that is just speculation on my part...and in the end what do I really know.

Another example. Given that the same provincial dept. was saying that the cougar had been extirpated here for years, which was at odds with what people/farmers/ranchers/etc. in rural areas were indicating. With the advent of consumer remote game cameras becoming more common...and pix of cougars starting to show up , more sightings were reported, then one was caught by a trapper...eventually the mounting evidence that cougars actually once again, exist in this province, could not be denied by govt. dept. Now I think all concerned out here, would agree that the numbers are not huge currently, but given the available habitat, food (lots of deer, etc.) there is potential for a relatively stable, albeit small population to reestablish .

In the end population estimates of the number of wild animals in huge areas can only be a guestimate. Methods for determining numbers can be labeled scientific, but they are still basically counts by humans and then estimates to figure out possible total numbers, and I don't think any count/estimate will ever be able to get it perfectly right, when determining how many numbers are out there in huge forest covered areas.

But in the end all this is just one man's uneducated opinion. Mine.

I agree with Robcorl. I think English is already established as a universal language on our planet...language of business, language of air control, etc. English is a language that is a current, modern language that evolves with the times. Some might say it is a living language....one that incorporates change well. Some say it it is a language that has much provision for detail, which is key to effective communication and understanding between the world's different cultures.

I think those other candidates for a universal lingua franca you mentioned are too obscure to get 'grip' in usurping English as the universal language. Although I must admit, I don't know anything about Laal.

As you say, and I quote:

"Some extinct language could work, but there might be complications with reconstructing a language nobody knows how to speak..." I wholeheartedly agree with you, that there might be some complications in this case...or for that matter...the masses learning Laal.
