I fund the bowline useful for making a fixed size, not tightening, loop around the waist to help with either pulling something or as a homemade safety belt - better than nothing but not especially good.
Also useful for making a "bosun's chair" by doubling the rope before making the knot (bowline on a bight).

That's essentially the fisherman's knot I tie. I wonder if that's how I actually tie it or if I'm just thinking in my head that I tie it slightly different than that. I don't have any cord handy on me right now to actually tie it and see if I'm doing it right or wrong.

That method of tying a bowline does look a heck of a lot easier and faster. I'll have to try and teach my youngest that way when he gets to the point where he needs to learn to tie a bowline for Scouts.
It's one of the quickest I've seen, and pretty much fool proof.

Happy TGIF for some of you, and Happy TGIS for others.

My recent support for some of your countries, apples from NZ, maple syrup from Canada, sardines and kipper snacks from Norway.
I've always liked canned sardines, but never craved them. Recently I read how healthy the little buggers are and have been eating at least one tin a week. King Oscar of Norway is my preferred brand for both sardines and smoked kipper snacks.
Mrs Bob doesn't care for the smell of them.

Today is the last Friday of work for Racer at the Big Shed for 2020. Volunteered to work tomorrow on overtime, and that will be my last working day for the year.

Scheduled Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for vacation next week to compliment the paid Christmas and New Years holiday, making it a two week long “vacation”.

Looking forward to another break, as if three quarantines weren’t already enough time off.

Last 'working' day of the year tomorrow, with a final exam, then three weeks holiday!

I've only recently learned to tie it, and it can be somewhat tricky. I find it easier with a nicely finished cord or rope, and larger diameter easier than smaller (my dexterity isn't what it used to be). Paracord, and braided ropes work pretty good. And using a sphere to help shape it makes it a bit easier too, also lending some mass to the knot.

Finish it off with a short length of the same rope, and it makes a nice tallywhacker, or on the end of a line you may want to toss over or across something.

Now I know I shouldn't be rooting through hidden bags before Xmas, but I accidently came across one of the presents my wife will be giving me for Christmas. Good thing she doesn't read this forum. She has picked up a book of sailor's knots, which shows you how to tie them (I assume, the book is sealed in plastic) with a white rope and a black rope to practice.
Looking forward to workin' away at some of these knots.

You had in fact strayed on to the set of Skyfall. Leaving quickly was the best move, there was a helicopter gunship due within moments!
I saw that movie and the set was great. I've always been amazed at what movie prop, set designers, set builders etc. can create.....a perfect background that can convince you that you are there somewhere in the world and not just at a studio like Pinewood or MGM, etc.

Although I'm not too crazy about some of the more obvious computer generated 'sets' and action scenes. Give me Bullit of 1968 (chase scene) rather than some modern car chase scene, some of which are made on the computer.
