The geothermal heat pump takes heat from the ground in winter to heat the house. In summer it takes heat from the house and stores in the thermal mass of the earth, but before passing that heat energy to the earth it has a loop that preheats the domestic hot water. So the tank closest to the heat pump was not connected electrically, and acted as a reservoir, before passing the preheated water to the other tank that was connected electrically.

A few years ago the domestic water preheat system failed, and rather than fix it I disconnected it. When the connected hot water heater failed a couple of years ago I simply transferred the power and water lines to the unused tank.

I can’t complain about the water heater failures, they are commercial units with a 6 year warranty against leaking. I got 8 years out of one, and the second is 12 years old.
Aha. Understood. Having said that, I'd expect any HWC to work faultlessly for 15 years plus if it's an enameled tank and 30 years plus if it's a stainless steel tank. If it's an old low pressure copper tank, then yeah.

Couple of inches of snow here today, so I wanted to try out the 4WD on the 2010 Explorer.
The 4X4 Auto worked so well that I didn't try the 4X4 High, maybe next snow.

Oh, and I forgot to ask: Why is that sump pump so far off to the side? I hope you have a high level alarm in that thing should the pump fail! I've seen them fail and it's not a pretty sight!

That's got to be a real pain in the pooper.
OTOH, that long swab up the nose and down the throat might be worse.

The sump to the right is only for catching, and then ejecting to the outside, water from the hot water tank if the pressure builds enough to blow the safety valve.

Why the plumber placed it so far away is a mystery. Perhaps he smoked one too many doobies that day.

The sump for the condensate is located to the left, tucked up close to the geothermal heat pump.

Some more pictures, the new water heater is connected to the internet. I can adjust the temperature, set schedules for heating the water and have it go on standby when there is no need for hot water.

Aha! Two sumps. This one looks lower than the other one. Cool bananas.

From the photo angle it looked like the rectangular sump has it's inlet pipe lower. If I had designed the thing, I would have put the sump in a chamber below the floor. That way it can drain the whole floor if there's a flood.
Did that once for a big wine cellar basement.

Speaking of which: Where's your wine collection? With a basement that big there's an opportunity missed!

Your bicycle is plumbed into your hot water system .... ?
Or is hiding behind the hot water system .. ?
Or did the floaties fall of while trying to cycle to Bob crossing the big pond .. ?
Inquisitive minds and all that ...

The rectangular sump was originally installed as a means to collect and expel the condensate from the geothermal heat pump. The tray that catches the water dripping off of the condenser is about 30” above the floor inside the cabinet.

As for a wine collection, well, I have enough collections already. Mrs. Racer would shoot me if I started collecting something else.

Besides, I rarely drink, almost never wine.
