Let's be clear about the difference between dependence and addiction.
Thanks for the clarification. I used the terms carelessly despite knowing the difference.

A little while ago we were talking about cricket. Yesterday a sad story came up, see the news link:
Phillip Hughes in critical condition following surgery after being knocked out by bouncer in Sheffield Shield match - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Current news about him is not any advance on that.

Ouch. Not a good spot on the head to be hit. Lets hope he makes full recovery.

Reading you people writing about such long term pain killer use makes me almost feel pain again. Thankfully I have only had great pain on two occasions. The first was fixed with a surgical procedure and the second with antibiotics. The pain was clearly a sign of some other disorder but I cannot imagine having to put up with pain like I had for a long time. But I have had to help some people with severe pain that goes on for several months. That gives a glimpse of the sort of thing you have.
In addition to the spinal discomfort I was having some hip pain. Actually, I had been experiencing the hip pain for about 20 years. I had gone to dozens of specialists and surgeons. Then, about 3 and a half years ago a nurse practitioner I had been seeing sent me to the local hospital for some imaging.

In about 4 months I was laying in a surgical theater getting a total hip replacement.

For comparison, the right hip is visible in the following image. Note the even and consistent margin between the femoral head and the acetabular cup.

After recovery the reduction in overall daily pain allowed me to reduce the daily Oxycontin dosage from 40mg to 30mg. The only thing that really concerned me was how long it took to finally get someone to actually admit that there was a problem.

Doctors "practice".

The good ones become very successful.

The bad ones bury their mistakes.

Reading x-rays was never my strong suit as a medic, but you don't need to be a radiologist (or have any real expertise at reading roentgenograms) to see that the femoral head is, shall we say (to avoid using a forum-inappropriate colloquialism), degenerated.

And it was.

Degenerate.

Somewhere I have an x-ray of French installed shoulder pins ... broke all ligaments in right shoulder after being thrown off a horse. Merde !!!

I cannot bring myself to eat horse meat ... but for that particular animal in question, I would make an exception.

No...my shoulder was replaced almost three years ago. The left knee is next in line. Too much high-impact sport and fast living...and homage paid to the hociR in past decades.

Yeah! How come he got pics. I didn't get any of mine. But I do have reminders. Every few months since April of last year, an infection boils up and I'm on Keflex again for 10 days. I think the l'il critters in there are mutating like crazy but I can't convince the system.

Maybe I should take some pictures. With a K3 - that should terrorism them into action.

Jac,
did you get the new xray attachment with your hociR?
I haven't seen it advertised anywhere.
Is it backwards compatible with the K5 models?

Naw. Just the original micro-wave version. Doesn't seem to add much to the IQ but it will cook a bratwurst in less than 30 seconds. Does appear to work almost as well with the KIIs, probably due to the elimination of the AA filter.
