I have always liked tomatoes. Raw and cooked.

But I absolutely despise catchup. Or ketchup. However you spell it, it is still not a vegetable.

Ronald Regan was wrong!
I like tomatoes too, properly ripened. I can't remember the last store-bought tomato I've eaten that didn't have the texture of an apple and the flavor of distilled water.

What's funny is that the US Supreme Court (I don't know why the SC has been dragged into this ) has declared tomatoes as vegetables, while scientifically speaking, tomato is a fruit!

Nahh. Home grown fruits and veggies don't really taste better!

Just like home cooked meals can't taste as good as those wonderful microwave meals.

The last two comments are out of order. No bacon or Godzilla!
Minus the one from Parallax.

That's pretty much it.

A story on NPR a while back detailed farming in Florida, specifically the production of tomatoes. Now the soil in Florida is mostly sand, which has little organic matter. So when the tomato crop is grown massive amounts of artificial nutrients have to be added via the water given to the crop.

Also, since tomatoes must be trucked long distances to market, and are quite fragile, they are harvested while still unripe.

Again, better living through chemistry comes into play. Something is added to hold off the ripening until just the right moment, which also adds to the "flavor" of the produce we get in the store.

Of course not all tomatoes come from Florida, some also come from California. Since the soil there has been over farmed, additional artificial nutrients are added to the produce from there also, and they too are harvested early.

We also get produce from South of the Equator, and it is also farmed in a manner similar to that here.

More red shells that only resemble what they really are.

And since the advent of the Jet Age, and development in indoor gardening, our Wonderful Neighbours to the North in Delta and Surrey, British Columbia there are the BC Hothouses, where all manner of vegetables are grown. Not just tomatoes, but bell peppers of every color, green, red, orange, yellow, purple, etc. and many other forms of produce come from there.

Year 'round.

Grown in giant indoor hydroponic gardens.

And shipped all over the world via jet airplane.
